well a buddy and i fished winnisquam today .. storms rolled thru this morning and it was a dooozy to boot,..rained to beat the band,, as for the fishing,,slo slo slo...and thats an understatement..we go a buck for the first fish, and BASS dont count,, we were shooting for salmon..or trout ..i had a couple LDR'S erly on before the rains on a TG coolwater...we waited out the rain/thunderstorm... and headed back out to tear up the waters>>NOT<<..i landed a smallie,, and my buddy pocketed a buck and landed a nice rainbow . 2 seperate times out there,,no salmon yet . does anyone fish out there and get salmon ? any suggestions on this body of water ..i threw everything on possible for lures,, from db's to guides and TG. tried just about every color of the spectrum...we use lead core as i dont have a downrigger ,,,YET .any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Stan all I use is lead to fish both winni and winnisquam. I have great success with 45 pound cabelas non lead core use nothing else!!!! Must have 90 feet of 8lb leader.Let out 4 colors in morning more as the day goes on.the real trick is the lure.I have the best success with a guide lure with the front a light peach color with diagonal stripes of yellow lime green blue and copper.the back you must put a minimum of 12 to 18 yellow eyes.this looks like a school of fish to the salmon.next bring a little container of bacon grease and put some on the hooks dont laugh it works and drives them nuts.give it a try and remember you can only keep 2 fish per day.Let me know how you do and tight lines
Good luck the leadman
BACON GREASE ? HAS ALL THE RAIN ON THE OPEN SEAS MADE U A LIL WATERLOGGED ? ARENT YOU THE CAPT OF "" SLO N EZZZ" . NOW I KNOW WHY YOU DONT CATCH MUCH ON THE LAKES..YOU USE BACON GREASE . YOU ARE THE ONLY GUY WITH FISHING LURES THAT HAVE HIGH CHOLESTEROL . STICK TO AQUARIUMS MY FRIEND ... AND TIGHT LINES TO YOU TOO .
I've only caught salmon on winnisquam with live bait by the mouth of the river behind martels. I have caught a few lake trout that liked speedy shiners and the small chevy chase, both gold with orange stripes. I have heard that a rainbow colored needle fish works good on that lake. I caught a few rainbow north of Pot Isl. towards the point, also a good place to catch lakers in the winter. Should be having more company with the new boat launch opening today! Tight lines.
