I'm planning on heading out to champlain. My buddy has fished bass there before but never salmon or lakers. He always went out of Malletts bay.
I see Woods posts about going out of Shelburne bay.
First question which bay would you prefer to go out of and why? Second Q- A decent place to stay saw some bad reviews of places and was looking for first hand reviews.
Third Q- If its too rough to get out to the main lake from Shelburne is there still water you can fish that is protected? Is it as good as the protected water at Malletts?

This time of the year I would fish and launch out of Burlington or out of Shelbure bay. Shelburne bay can be very shallow for the first 500 feet. For Salmon we use to fish around Burlington and around Red Rock (the north side ledges of the bay right at the begining of the lake). Lake trout are just about everywhere in the lake. The bays are not holding much Lake trout right now. I would start fishing for Lake trout in 75 FOW and go as deep as 90 FOW. Believe it or not most Lake trout deeper than that will be small. The post I put early about where to fish should get you on fish. We mostly use Suttons, brass- chrome color but they will bite on most anything in their face. Lake trout in this lake will bite even if its 100 degrees out. Many times we will fish for a pass, jump in for a few minutes and resume fishng. Fish close to the bottom 6"-12", if you hit bottom in the wrong area of this lake you will lose equipment.
We use to stay in Shelburne at several different motels but always found it hard to find a place to park the boat. Now we stay in the boat.
If it gets rough depending which way the wind is blowing you may be able to fish Shelburne bay.(The deeper side of the bay is the left side if your going out toward the lake). You could travel and fish down Thompson point south, or Mallets bay or the Inland sea up north. Good luck
Several motel options to consider located on Route 7 (a/k/a Shelburne Road), including North Star Motel (www.northstarmotelvt.com), Dutch Mill Motel (www.dutchmillvt.com), Countryside Motel (www.countrysidevt.com), and T-Bird Motor Inn (www.tbirdmotorinn.com). You can also type "shelburne vermont motels" and "south burlington vermont motels" into google.com and you'll see a whole bunch more. The ones I've listed are more or less grade-B places to stay as I'm thinking you're looking for a decent place to sleep (and decent bed) and good location for getting to a launch without the high cost of a national motel/hotel chain.
