Hello all in the stucco realm. I'm an Ironworker by trade, and probably have no business trying to tackle a large stucco project, but I'm one of those avid do-it-yourselfers. I managed to add an addition that was bigger than the original house (isn't saying much), and I'm ready for the body work. I chose stucco because of the look. There aren't a whole lot of stucco houses where I live, mostly vinyl and like my old siding...aluminum. I'm putting on a three part system like the pros do, not like the cookie cutter houses with 1/4 of paint and sand. While I still have some pride, I have to shamefully enter my first post with some questions, that hopefully can be answered before I start off on the wrong foot.
First, I was reading some of the posts, and read the one on efflorescence. It mentioned lime as the cause. Would using a different mix (without lime) solve that problem?
Many of the pictures on this site show many, many expansion joints on the corners of windows. I have a ton of windows, and I was hoping to avoid too many expansion joints...if any at all. I also have some 45o corners that I don't know whether to place an expansion joint. I have seen pictures both with and without. Also, what is the best type of mesh to use...I didn't know there were so many types...vinyl, paper-backed, regular galvanized. Are vinyl casings OK, or does everyone use metal. I don't want to ask everything right off the bat...I feel stupid already. I learned in the past that good advice is hard to come by, and I don't like to half-ass my work, so the professional opinion is what I'm seeking. Thanx in advance...
