Scuba Diving Koh Phangan
I've been to Phangan a few times in the past and have done a few dives in and around the area. I now hear that the island's dive business is becoming busier again, which surprises me as the diving is basically ABYSMAL compared to anywhere else in Asia. Not only that, but almost all of the dive shops hate each other and continually bad mouth their competitors to customers and/or students, to the point of accusing them of being dangerous not to mention corrupt or illegally operating. I can only assume that it is busier as a direct fall out from the Tsunami which affected the far superior outfits and dive sites on the east coast. |
is this the beach from the movie the beach?

yeah, most of the people who own dive shops on phangan have been there too long and with their own inherited paranoia (or should that be self induced paranoia), they don't get along with one another. |

Did a couple of dives at Sail Rock, which were terrible. Some of the beach dives off Koh Ma and Had Yao are pretty good though. Depends a lot on the season I think. Phi phi is MUCH better. |

yeah, phi phi is a lot better. i can sympathise with your sail rock dive and that is supposed to be one of the best in the gulf... assumin you can see further than the hand in front of your face. koh mah/mae haad... if you are very, very lucky then for about one week out of the year the vix is good enough for this to be a 'reasonable' house reef, but nothing more. haad yao is ****e tho... |

I've never dived around Koh Tao, is that a lot better? After my Sail Rock dive I didn't think it was worth trying. 2 m visibility is just not my thing... |

koh tao shares the same crap conditions as phangan. it's only a gulf not a sea, so it's not deep and there's no current to speak off to bring in clean water. in addition, koh tao is a diving factory who specilise in big groups and huge boats, with very little personal touch. |

i remember there used to be an easy divers on the beach owned by some ****ed aussie **** called Ben, he had 2 ****ed instructors one ****** up scottish guy and one ugly ****ed english guy. Also some divemaster named trotter from wales who could never complete his visa run without ******* up. They were a good company! |

the same dm who didn't have a watch (never mind a computer), his depth gauge was fekked and didn't know how to use rdp's. however he would stop other groups now and again and check their depth and reckoned he was good at counting. |

You mean there's no reason to goto phangan then? other than drugs? if i was into the latter, i'd stay in bkk. The diving is THAT bad in phangan? tell me now, and i'll resched to somewhere else for my end-of-may vacation. (phiphi is affected by monsoon at end of may, no?) grrrr... |

Phangan is a fantastic place. Many reasons to go there other than drugs. But I wouldn't go there only for diving. Even during the off season in Phiphi, the diving there is much better than Phangan. |

as luck would have it, i AM going just for diving. really, my expectations are low - and i'm only looking to test out some new dive gear, and take it easy - again, expecting little in return. to make life a bit more pleasant, can someone be so kind as to RECOMMEND A HOTEL for may/june timeframe. my preferences: - located on the west side somewhere between thong sala and chalok lam (the dive boat stipulated this for pick up) - one big bed with aircon - a hotel within spitting distance from the beach/sand - and something not too old i'd greatly welcome the experience of those more familiar with koh phangan. thanks, and enjoy. |

did my open water course on phangan and can highly recommend a dive shop run by Mr kim which is the 1st dive shop (i think) when you come off the pier at thong sala, he will also sort out any travel arrangements ect. The 2 instructers we had were called gaby and michelle and were very patient and professional and we learnt a hell of a lot. Went back this year and dived at sail rock with visability at about 8 mtrs. saw many fish including trigger and had a great day. Have only dived around phangan and on koh chang but really enjoyed sail rock and buddah view (mr kim) is a lot more reasonable than many of the other operators and will not rip you of, so go see him. will be back their in jan for the advanced course mainly because i felt the instructers were fantastic. |

June is a good time to go as the rains are only light afternoon showers and if you go in the AM you should have a good day. Staying in Maynam sounds like a good place for you. Orchid resort is good, don't know about AC, but frankly your right on the beach and shouldn't need it, but that's me. I don't have any phone numbers I guess you could look on the net. I've heard some shady stuff about Had Son Resort, so I'd stay away from there. But that area is another for you to consider. Very built up though. |
