This idea will give support to him and his family but really I dont think the Thailand government will be phased by a petition, what he really needs is to appeal then pay a bribe to the Judges its the only way, whether he is guilty or not, same with Corby if they paid the bribe to the Judges without splashing it allover the papers or other publicity she would be out by now and we wouldnt have to put up with her crap, in Asia it is how things work - get real, sorry |

yeah it's true what you say, i'm not sure how this petition thing will work either, but we gotta try! When we get 1000 we are doing a sponsored bike ride from Bury, Manchester to number 10, to give the names to Mr Blair to get Michael's case recognised, after that who know's. The money raised will go to Bangwang Prison hospital. All i know is that i want to do my bit, by giving Michael at least some hope. |

On what grounds do you think that his sentence should be reduced?Because he is young and Western? To receive that sentence he must have been a dealer supplying illegal drugs. He should be thankful that he is not on deathrow. There are signs everywhere in Thailand warning tourists not to deal with drugs and that the penalties are severe. He made his choice and now he must deal with the consequeces. Instead of earning his money by legal means he choose the illegal get rich quick way. If foreigners came to my country to sell classified drugs , I would expect them to get a jail sentence if they are caught. He knew he was breaking the law and its right that he should serve his given sentence. |

Jail sentence might be ok , being caught with 3400 pills ! but 99 years is definitely inhuman !!!! THIS should be changed ! hav fun bob |

Persons from foreign countries sdo not have a right to dictate to the thao Authorities what the correct punishnent should be. Some countries believe that prostitutes should be stoned to death, do these countries have the right to tell Thailand to stone all their prostitutes to death? |

Michael is a friend of a close friend. Its difficult becasue i agree with you PW. But i said i would help any way i could because he is a friend! I use these forums quite a lot, and i thought i would put the petition site up here. Maybe a bit hypercritical of me i know. I do argree that 99years is a bit severe, and Micheal already knows that he is lucky to have his life. He was caught when police were gunning down people in the streets. The government wanted to stop all drug activity wthin 60 days. i respect all opinons and its interesting to see what people feel. |

If Thai people carry 3400 estacy drug for sale, they might be sentenced to death not only in Thailand but also in other civilized countries. |

I read this post many times and also the link with some back info,I was torn on an appropriate retort to this post. True this guy was caught breaking the law in a country with severe drug sentencing, but should the sentence be 99 years? Obviously he understood the consequences of his actions and to this I hold little empathy "you do the crime ya do the time" But I also believe that people make mistakes and if given the opportunity they can learn from their mistakes. Having a sentence of 99 years does not allow for any rehabilitation for this young guy. I think a sentence that reflects an example to foreigners would have been best suited. It is true there is vast amounts of corruption in the judicial system in Thailand and thats the hardest part to seperate myself from. Yes the drug laws are stiff but if you are fortunate enough to be connected to the right people and make a payoff, is this person any less guilty? I have done many stupid things in Thailand and have been around many illegal situations, I think many of us have whether we know it or not. I have also seen corruption first hand in Thailand where people I know have benefitted from it. Nobody was injured but police and high officials went home with cash and alcohol. This is one of the reasons its hard to say if you come across the right police officer and have the right payoff you are any less guilty and shouldnt face your sentence. In several situations you can be caught breaking a law but the outcome can be very different.... |

party guy is right, however once it gets to this stage and the court case is done there is always the appeal stage, this is where through your lawyers contacts arrangemnets can be made to reduce the sentence but still a reduction may be to 50 years and cost big money, Thailand has a prisoner exchange progrom with Britain but about half or two thirds(someone correct me if I am wrong) the sentence must be served first in Thailand, not much comfort for someone the main thing is for him to have money available in prison for decent food to be brought in.I did some time in Thailand not a pleasent experience but can be done easily if you have support, the westerners all stick together inside we were even singing songs (tie a yellow ribbon etc and had some laughs) but still an intimidating place, I was only saved by some conections, some good references from home and the fact I had a Thai wife and kid and was working in the tourism industry and twisted it to seem I was helping Thailand, but I did not get caught with thousands of E's,I dont think there is much anyone can do unfortunately but give the guy some letters and support, books and money to pay guards to bring in food from the stalls outside. |
