Spending the month of February in Ban Tai
Hi everyone, I'm planning on renting a bungalow on the beach for the month of Feb. I was wondering if you guys can answer the following questions for me. 1) if I'm staying in Ban Khai, can I easily walk to Had Rin and Thongsala? How long is the walk? 2) I don't want to be in the middle of the action of Had Rin, but I want to have easy access to the nightlife and restaurants, but I want where I'm staying to be quieter and the beach to be nice. I don't mind walking. Is Ban Khai a good place to be? 3) i found an air conditioned bungalow (one bed) with private bath for about $500 US dollars for the month right on the beach. Is that a good deal? 4) I can easily swim in the ocean, yes? I've heard something about low tide, but i'm sure that February will be fine. Thanks, guys! |

hi ! ban tai is about 7 km from haad rin , and there is a biggg hill to climb. not too nice walking in the feb. heat and you have to watch out for bikes, cars and dogs, but there is a taxi service running form tongsala via ban kai / tai to haad rin. one ride should cost you about 30 bath. you can also rent bikes for about 4 us$/day i personally prefer to stay on the quieter sunset side of haad rin . only a 9 min walk to the fmp party beach and the pubs there . when staying for about a month you should get a better deal for your bungalow than 500 us$ /month. check if you really need AC, much cheaper without air condition. also depends on the size of the bungalow ,of course. i pay for a simple non AC bungalow about 5 dollars /night 10 m from the beach check out http://www.phanganisland.com/ for nice bungalow rental offers( no personal experience here) my tip: dont book via internet , just show up and test for a few days. lots of funny surprises on koh Phangan :-)) weather is best in thailand form jan to march, no more monsoon rains and not so hot yet. best conditions for swimming, but always be careful. some deaths near haad rin because of yelly fish and drug abuse. tip: you can check the whole area from home via google earth or maps.google.com . high res map from KPG is available there. Veryy cooool !! personally i would not spend 1 month in one place. hop around. party in haad rin , relax in tan sadet , visit bottle beach, tong nai pan noi ,and koh maa. lots of cheap bungalow outside the full moon party time available in all those places. also hope to be there in feb!! have fun bob |

Yo, The subject on your post says Ban Tai and then in your post it says Ban Kai. Ban Kai is closer to Had rin then Ban Tai. You will not be walking to had rin from either of these areas. They are great areas to be but your have seperated yourself from Had rin by mountainous roads that wind up and down for about 5km or so. These roads aint meant for walking, actually these roads aint meant for anything!!!! Bob suggestion of staying on sunset beach in Had rin is a good one, you can feel secluded enough that you can relax but also within walking distance to the restaurants and nightlife of Had rin. Also agree that staying in this area for a month is highly not advised, travel around the island and explore some of the other beaches, many great places that are way more thailand than Had rin..renting a motorbike is a must, my advice is to rent one in Thong sala and explore from there, usually cheaper and less hassle than in Had rin....Peaceout Partyguy |

Hello! I absolutely agree on renting a motorbike when staying on Phangan. Standard price is 150 Baht a day and a lot more convinient than finding a taxi. I would recommend you to check out this place: http://www.thesanctuarythailand.com/indexF.htm. It is the next beach north of Haad Rin and there is a boat taxi that will get you to the inferno in 5 min =) There are lots of great bars and restaurant around the island but if you´re looking for something extra I can advise you to go to Sheesha in Chaloklam on the northern coast. Outstanding on Phangan. And why not stay on that beach for one week? Not great for swimming but chilled atmosphere and a decent road to Thongsala. Furthermore is there a trail that leads to Bottle beach (Haad Khuat) east of Chaloklam. A rough two hour walk but the scenery is mayby the best you´ll find on Phangan and the swim after the walk will be your best!!! I´ve heard that you can rent a bungalow from maybe 4,000 Baht a month but I guess not on a beach, so 500 US sounds far too much! And for the tides the east coast is far better than the west, too shallow and no waves. Anyway, have a great time on KP, you won´t fail unless you mix shrooms with buckets and motorbikes or anything else stupid!! ;) Feel free to send a mail if you have any more questions! Kalle |
