Dear Kaitlin, I am so sorry your grandfather is so ill. Most generally an inheritance is considered your separate property as long as you do not comingle it with community property funds or assets. Be very careful about it! Do not put in any type of joint account or put it into any joint owned property or business. If it is enough to worry about ask your lawyer for advice on how to safeguard it. Praying for your grandfather.

kaitlin: My father was not in good health when my ex filed. He gave me some money to help pay for the Lawyer. During the divorce process, my husband was cut off from my family money by a Trust and my brother who is a spokesperson/advocate for the family involving the Trust. I live in MA and he did not get any of my Dad's inheritance after he died and after the divorce was final. Money matters are handled by a Lawyer and belong in the divorce agreement. Discuss this with a Lawyer like the other poster said.
