Question if you don't mind. Trolling the flies, what is your setup. Are using a jigging machine(s) on the lead cores. How are you moving the flies on the riggers with dodger?
We used two types of setups; SWR and straight lead core.
The straight lead core has a leader of heavy mono tied to a barrel swivel and a 12 ft leader of 6 lb fluorocarbon that is tied to the fly. You let out 6 colors of lead in the water and place the rod in the rod holder and wait for a hit and occasionally pump the lead core to entice a hit. No jigging machine used on the last three trips.
SWR (secret weapon rig) is a setup that has two colors of lead core on a reel. The first layer is backing mono, followed by 2 colors of lead core, followed by a 50 ft of heavy leader tied to a barrel swivel and the final 6 lb fluorocarbon leader tied to the fly. Pay out the 2 colors and any amount of the backing mono one wishes and place into the downrigger release. Lower the downrigger to the desired depth and being mindful of the added depth of the 2 colors of lead core.
The mere fact that the fly is traveling at 2 mph is action.
We used no other attracting device; in either case one could use a dodger, flasher, spinners or any other device as an attractor before the fly.
