Anon, you have it in one. Sharp practice IMHO.

£200+ to mend a machine I could replace for not much more is hardly sensible. I suggest if you watch Watchdog this goes on a lot.

Repairman comes out, say £50 + VAT call out.

Cost of parts say £80 + one hour at £30.

£160 + vat to repair something worth not much more than that, but you have "wasted" £50 getting him in in the first place, so may as well have it done.

Sadly white goods are now so cheap you may as well bin them if you cannot fix it yourself, and there is lots of help on the Internet, or good DIY skills can work.

Just remember to UNPLUG IT FIRST (!)and I find taking a photograph of complicated wiring before you start pulling things apart can help.
