I do not know about any special prep, but I do know and I hate to admit this but Forry had a lure that he taped that caught our 2 best salmon out on Champlain.
For 3 years he would put those home made tape jobs in the water and at least on my boat they were not producers but I have to admit on Champlain that lure was the best producer!
Some say to clean with an alcohol swab first,(I don't) I trim off the excess after taping I have not clear coated any yet but i do sometimes use some heat to pervent peeling. If you need anymore help give me shout or e-mail,have fun with it, it's a sickness!!!
we tape our own. My girls (young girls) taped all winter while watching tv. no preperation at all.... a swipe with a paper towel at most. We only cut rough size, then trim with an exacto knife. we have a dynomite selection and some kill !! After the tape is in place we run the blow dryer to get the metal hot to touch and the tape seems to hold just fine. we do 4 of every color and at least 2 of the 4 with a copper back. if somthing starts to work we build some variety of shades to dial in on the killer pattern. Its is like fly tying. the rewards are tremendous !! you need a hole punch set and a scissor set with the jaggard edges. It is an addiction ! Soon you will have a fit trying to decide on what colors to use.
Thanks guys for the great feedback!
Let's hope this doesn't turn out like fly tying. I have fur & feathers from around the world. And that's not counting all the synthetics & saltwater materials.
If you ever need something and you can't find it let me know because I probably have it. ;-)
More great info.
Thank you John!
My Tackle box is full of "Big John" taped lures I bought last winter and I can attest I've caught plenty of fish. In fact, to be honest, they have all been mixed in with my other db smelts and guide specials and the only way I can tell the difference is the Big Johns don't have the little metal O ring. I've often thought about doing some myself, but I get over whelmed looking at the cataloges not knowing exactly what to buy. I wish there was a "starter kit" like fly tying kits.
