Trolling motor

new to this page, but looking for some advice.
I recently acquired a 16' Lund with 40hp Honda 4-Stroke outboard.
Is this motor suitable for trolling for trout/salmon all day long? Or am I better off getting a bracket & mounting my small outboard as a kicker?
Any & all advice much appreciated!

Re: Trolling motor

A lot of guys troll all day long w/ a motor like that. Should be no problem at all. You may need a drift sock or trolling plate to drop down on your speed but that's not a big deal.

I troll all day w/ 250 hp Suzuki 4 stroke. Have acumulated a lot of hours on the motor that way but putting a kicker on my boat would have been a project.

Re: Trolling motor

I have a 115 Honda on a 16.5 boat. I troll many hours with this motor.
I did put in a low speed prop, and had it tuned up for low speed.
I have no problem in going slow.

Re: Trolling motor

I used a 40hp honda on a 16ft alum. witha drift sock I can get my speed down to 1.6 with it . you should have no problem

Re: Trolling motor

i dont like dealing with driftsocks and the trolling plate will work but if you already have a small trolling motor why not put it on. i went from a gallon an hour to a gallon every 7 hours with my 115 merc and 6 hp evenrude. i also like 2 motors to cover the what ifs. with the speed controller on the small unit i can really get my speeds where i want them, down to the tenth of a mile per hour range. why put unnecessary hours on the bigger more expensive motor
