Attractors

I will be getting my boat in the water Friday and will be fishing ASAP. I have a question about the use of flashers or attractors this time of the year. Do you use them? If so, do you attach them to the down rigger ball or to the cable...meaning do you attach them before the ball or after the ball? Thanks in advance for your responses.
