keep and eye on Craigslist. Trollers probably wouldn't steal them so it was probably kids. Once they realize they can't cast them well, they will be looking to sell them so watch Craigslist and local pawn shops. Local is key because if it were kids, they can't drive themselves to far away shops. I'd even stop at any local shops and tell them what happened....they may help and nab the crook(s)
