before condemning anyone, I think we need to add the perspective that this is this groups first try at the derby and they are trying to make it the best event they can. This new $100 reward is an attempt to make the event better but it was misguided...they didn't anticipate the affect on the fishery and I certainly don't think this award was a carefully executed plan to better the fishery.
I will drop them an email after the event to mention how this will affect the fishery and a better way to present this award (each ticket at the award has a chance to win it is better as it doesn't promote keeping marginal fish). The new organizers have been VERY responsive and tripping overthemselves to make things better so I don't think everyone hopping on them on this is the best way forward.
It's too close to the derby to change award setups. If I don't get positive response to my recommendation after the derby, I will rally the troops here to have them contact the organizers in mass.
Since the $100 prize was just added, I'm hoping that many won't catch it this first year...and those that do (and especially those on this site) will use restraint in deciding which fish to keep. I personally won't register a fish that I don't think has a chance for a normal prize.
