Depending on the color / finish, you may NOT want to clean it up. By example, a top performing lure for trout / salmon in Moosehead is copper -- but apparently older, "tarnished" copper lures work even better (a guide told me this and showed me his as proof). I actually took hooks a split rings off a couple of my copper lures and have been letting them sit outside to "tarnish."
