Here's a small Report I found about the Winni Derby!!!!!!!

New Hampshire: The big news from the Granite State this weekend was mostly about the Winni Derby, where just under two thousand anglers vied for many thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Landlocked salmon were highlighted for the most valuable rewards.

Don Miller, NH Fisheries Biologist for the big lakes region passed on this information regarding last weekend’s huge Winni Derby based on Lake Winnipesaukee:

"We had some incredible numbers and size of fish,” Miller reported. “Over five hundred salmon were entered with a average size of well over three pounds, the largest average size of salmon we’ve seen.”

“Jeffrey Bellen of Bennington won the grand prize for largest salmon with a 5.8 pounder that was over 23 inches. Second place fish went to Joseph Bilotta that weighed 4.702 pounds and also was over 23 inches. He was the leader for two days until the larger salmon came in. Third place was won by Christopher Borst of Litchfield with a 4.56 pounder; Ken Cass of Campton brought in a 4.42 pounder for fourth place. Fifth place winner was caught by Ray Houle of Goffstown with a 4.32 pounder.”

“In the lake trout division, Ed Kelleher had an eleven pound, 31 inch fish. Second place was taken by Terry White of South Ryegate, Vermont that was just over eight pounds.” (Editor’s note: “We’re proud of our young friend Justin Ordeshook of Hooksett, who boated the fourth place laker that was just under five pounds. We’ve fished with Justin and his dad Jim since Justin could hardly peek over the side of his dad’s boat. He’s a credit to the young fishermen of this state and will be a constant threat to win this derby!”)

Miller said that winners in the Junior Division were Reggie Moody of Tuftonboro, who’s salmon of just under four pounds won him a nice boat, motor and trailer. Second place in this division was Jordan Woodall. Hunter Burlock of Berlin, Corbin Boucher of Plymouth and Sean Johnson of Pembroke were 3rd, 4th and 5th placers respectively, with salmon all over three and a half pounds.

Don said that conditions were tough but the fishermen were handling it well. “I stood at the docks watching people just standing there fishing and shivering. But they all seemed to be enjoying it! There were less people entered that caught more fish.”

This writer says Rick Davis, the chairman of this outstanding event, deserves high praise. Rick’s dedication to the sport and especially Lake Winnipesaukee is legendary.

Alan Nute at A.J’s Bait and Tackle in Meredith reported that both the first and second place salmon in the Winni Derby were caught by his customers on live smelt fished on floating fly lines and slider hook rigs.

“It seemed like the hot colors for lures had some white combination. All white Needlefish and white and other combinations were good on the Top Guns, Mini Guns and DB Smelt.”
