Fished Winni today

First of all, I need to ask if my hearing is going...? I could have sworn I heard Salmonitis on the radio a couple times, but when I tried hailing him no response. So, either I was hearing things, or he didn't want to talk to the "slippery knot"? LOL

Anyways, fished with John S and LOL Dave... Lets just say, there was a LOT of laughing on the boat today. I'm not going into it, but each of us caused some sort of commotion that got the other two laughing quite hard.
Those "whitecaps" and "rollers" were something else today! Didn't start off too bad, but eventually we were putting more effort into staying in the boat (on a turn) than fishing. At one point, while doing 2.3mph, I thought the rigger balls and lines were going to pass us. Man that wind and surface current was movin'.
It started off slow for us... maybe 45 minutes to get the first bite. Left rigger goes off... Dave bolts to it like greased lightning... and the rod is just thumpin'! We're picturing another Hawkeye cover picture for a second (yeah right) but it turned out to be a 13" white perch. He must have been on steroids as he bent the rod over more than most of the other fish today.
After the perch incident, it wasn't long before we found the salmon... landed a couple decent ones 17-19" and dropped a few behind the boat (coupla shorts). Then we hooked into a nice rainbow, which went home with John to become dinner. It was only 15 1/2" but fat and tasty looking.
After the 'bow we had a dry spell for a bit, maybe 20 minutes? Then we located a small pod of salmon again. Pulled in another decent fish and threw back a couple more runts to 12" or so.
Tried running through this pod again and this time pulled up a laker. I think I almost broke Daves leg and may have gave John a slight concussion as I dove over them for the rod. The way the thing slammed down, it was MY turn to reel in a big boy. Well, it was a good fight, I expected 6 pounds of laker to appear... but it was just a 17-18" fish either foul hooked or wrapped in line. Either way he wasn't having it. He shook the line and headed back to the depths at the back of the boat.
After this we took lessons from Dave on how to properly resucitate a fish while holding onto the gunwale in 3-4' swells. Thanks for that lesson Dave. Oh, did I mention... the proper technique is for the knot to unravel at that exact moment? Yeah, they don't call me slipknot for nuthin'! So, if you see a short salmon with a pink/silver smelt gun hanging off its lip, its Johns lure. I take full responsibility for that one. Good thing it wasn't a monster.
Next up was John... he showed us how to aerial lift a laker into the boat. Not quite sure if he was aiming for my head or if the waves really did cause him to launch it at me. Either way, it was boated and released unharmed, but perhaps a little nauseaus from his flight time...?
Around this time, the waves were getting old... we decided to look for a bit of sheltered water. Yeah right! We tried a while in a different spot, but soon the waves were just as bad. We decided to call it a day, so picked up lines. Of course, Dave had to show us just how lucky (ehem, skilled) of a fisherman he is and as he pulled up the first line there's a fish there. Of course... the lucky frenchman catches the first of the day and loses the last of the day. By the way he was walking I think he really DID borrow a horseshoe from Adrien and was storing it... well, you know where.
Picked up the rest of the lines and ran back to the ramp at a whopping 8-9mph to avoid getting completely drenched by the waves.
Oh... by the way... most fish caught betweeen 40 and 46 feet down over 90 to 140 FOW. Colors best hit were pink/silver any size or shape... and orange/gold. Speed ranged between .01 and 3.8 depending on wind and who was "captain". However, 95% of our time was from 2.0 to 2.4mph
Was a great day. Had a lot of fun. Thanks for joining me guys. Hope I didn't bore everyone else with my novel here?
Lastly, I can't remember ever wearing a fleece jacket in August before??? What's up with this weather???

Thanks Salty. Maybe he was out there in heart... ? Whoever it was sure sounded like him.
We actually thought we saw the PeggyC out there first thing, but as we got closer realized it wasn't.

Re: Fished Winni today

You guys said it all, well allmost all, we did have plenty of laughs. Hard to take fishing too serious with those two guys and the waves were unbelievable, not sure how we managed to get the fish in the boat that we did. A day to remember.

Hope we can do it again with calm seas.

John S.
