You can get a # but I'm not sure if it has to be hooked up to a gps that's a good question.I will go back and listen to it again and let you know but you should still get the # it's free.Do you have a GPS?

Joe yes it will still work not being hooked up to a GPS it Just won't give you lat/long # so they could find you easier.I have not hooked mine up yet to my GPS but am going to do it this winter My radio is new also.Good luck.
