More dumb questions - Autopilot options, pros and cons
I fish alone a lot (violins please) and like the experiences of many posted here on the board have had many a rough day trying to keep the boat on course while messing with gear, fighting fish etc. So...thinking about investing in an autopilot. I have a side console Alumacraft Magnum, 18 ft long and 8+ ft beam with a Honda 90 4 stroke. While I am semi-incompetent mechanically, I have never seen an autopilot installation up close and personal. Does the autopilot mechanism mount on the steering column (under the dash?). Is it basically an electric motor that mounts in line on the steering column? Any recommendations for makes / models and does anyone have any pictures of their own installation? I have NMEA 2000 compatible Lowrance 337c and was hoping to find a unit that could tie into the GPS via a NMEA 2000 network connection. Any and all opinions and advice welcome. Thanks in advance for anyone who posts info.
