Re: A REMINDER

Is that just for people that live in N.H.?

Erin

Re: Re: A REMINDER

Everyone, even out-of-staters that drives a boat with a 25 HP or larger motor.
Bob

Re: Re: Re: A REMINDER

Just a technicality but it's anyone with a boat that has a motor of MORE than 25HP.

Re: Re: Re: Re: A REMINDER

Re: A REMINDER

Is January 1st is just the deadline for the online test or is it the deadline for requiring a certificate ?

I thought it was an age thing born on such and such a date your reuired to have the certification etc. before such and such a date, etc.

By the way thanks for the reminder, I think I'll do it this week.

Just a reminder for all those who have not taken the Boater Safety test for your certificate to operate a boat with a motor greater than 25HP on NH waters. Starting January 1st you will have to take a proctored exam and no longer can take the exam online.

Re: Re: A REMINDER

I guess I ditto John S. question. But in any case, does anyone have a link for the on-line test? I barely have any time to fish let alone make a proctored exam.

Re: Re: Re: A REMINDER

go to link nh fish and game and check out outdoor recreation it will tell you what to do . I think this is a great idea no more on line testing . should have to be done in person . "reel it in "

Boating Course / Test

Well being that I'm 5 hours away from NH I think I'll do the on line test before it expires on 12/31. It might be a "great idea" if you're local, but its a bit inconvient for those of us who are further away and don't get but a couple chances a year to come up and fish.

John S., others - here's a link to the on-line study course. I skimmed it quick and I'd say its important to run through the course before the test as like all standardized tests there is a formula to the way the information is presented:

Re: Boating Course / Test

I took it once as a practice test and passed no problem, when I do it for real and pay for it, I'll probably flunk a few times.

If memory serves me right, you have to pay for it each time you take it. I think it's a great idea to be certified, but bottom line, it's all about the money, why should there be a fee each time it's taken, wouldn't one fee be enough ???? No sense in complaining, guess I'll just take the test.

I agree, if your out of state you should be able to take it on line.

Re: Boating Course / Test

Eric I don't think you have to take the course in NH I believe it just has to be an approved NASBLA course.
wasn't difficult, and kind of interesting.

Re: Re: Boating Course / Test

Here's what it says:
"Effective January 1, 2007, persons will be eligible to apply for a Safe Boater Education Certificate only by successfully passing one of the following:......."
Plus
"A National Association of State Boating Law Administrators–approved course and examination from another state"

The way I read that is if you have a NASBLA Safe Boater Ed. Certificate it makes you eligible TO APPLY for a certificate in NH.
Anybody know if that's correct???

Re: Re: Re: Boating Course / Test

My understanding that as long as it is NASBLA approved, I believe the state of New Hampshire Honors it. I could be wrong, but I believe that is the way they explained when I took the course in Exeter.

Re: Boating Course / Test

This is directly from the New hampshire hadnd book

A Safe Boater Education Certificate:
May be obtained only by persons 16 years old or older.
Must be awarded by a boating safety course or equivalency exam approved by the New Hampshire Marine Patrol or a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators approved course from another state.
Must be carried onboard.

Re: Re: Boating Course / Test

You mean NH, and any other state for that matter, would pass up an opportunity to get more $ out of out-of staters?

Here ya go

I scored a 95 first time. its very basic stuff but a good thing to do it reminds you of things that you do not think about that often.

Good luck Charlies charters

Re: Re: Re: Re: A REMINDER link for eric h

I had a lot of navigation / safety training while in the Navy and that helps with some stuff. However, when taking any standardized exam there is a lot of stuff that to make sure to get it right you sort of need to cram for. For example, I still remember a lot of stuff (memonics like "red, right, returning" and "even red nuns have odd black cans"), but things can change (black cans are typically green now). Also, who would know or remember the exact length brackets for Class A, 1, 2 and 3 vessels? Or exactly what to fill out for a "float plan."

I'm going to basically do the on line course, take a practic exam and then do the on line exam straight away so I don't forget some of the 'nonsense' factoids. I'd prefer to see more emphasis on safety and less on "a Class 1 vessel is between 16 and 26 feet long." I'm sort of surprised on the amount of stuff that is administrative / factoid in nature. And judging by the way a lot of speed boaters and jet ski people act on Winni, I wonder about the impact. I'd hope this would improve things on the water...has it?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: A REMINDER link for eric h

And White Cap -- thanks for reminding us! Obviously doing the internet / on line exam is more convenient than a proctored exam...Eric

John S. and anyone else: you were right about the "age" issue. For me (42) the requirement kicked in this year. For anyone born on or after 1957 (but before 1963) it kicks in in 2007 and for everyone else its 2008. The big thing about the 1/1/07 deadline is regardless of whether you're required to have it in 2007 you won't be able to do the on line test...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: A REMINDER link for eric h

Thanks for making that clear Eric, I'll wait til my Social Security check comes in and take the test, in case I flunk it 3 or 4 times, LOL.

Seriuosly, good idea to take it before the deadline and get it over with.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Point to consider

My two cents...take the course in your state of residence from your own Enviroment Police Force. Usually it is free. I took mine (with the whole family)in Massachusetts and it was several nights over the span of a few weeks. It covers me in the other states I boat in. If you take the the NH online course it will cover you for NH waters only and not other states. The EPO that taught my class said Mass. is only a few years from enacting the same license requirement as NH and will they will begin charging for it as well. I believe there is a link to it on the Mass fish and game website.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Point to consider

Good point Proline.

Its just too bad that "NASBLA" is too much like the acronym for "NAMBLA" ("north american man boy love association"). LOL. When I was a kid, after reading about those wackos in the paper, I would answer the phone with it..."north american man boy love association"...it drove my parents nuts but often resulted in a lot of laughter on both ends of the phone!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Point to consider

Proline
When we took the course in New Hampshire, they told us that the internet course was accepted by NH only. After taking the course in a classroom you were go for everywhere, at least that is what they told us.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Point to consider

That's what I mean if not clear, the NH or other state classroom class covers you everywhere, the NH online course is only good for NH waters. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Point to consider
