Myself, not an Ice Fisherman, I have you agree with you 100%.
I've caught two tagged Rainbows over 3 pounds the past few years (1 in Winni and 1 in Squam)while trolling, too bad a bigger fish didn't win the big Derby $$$.
Biggest fish or total weight wins most fishing contest I ever heard of. But the Rotary Detrby has done **** good so if it aint broke dont fix it. I guess being that the outcome is 100% luck, everyone has a chance in the Winni Ice Derby.

He is lucky he caught it during this derby instead of the Great winni derby, if caught during the Winni it would have won him around what $150.00 or so. What a shame that a little trout just because it has a tag in it's fin wins more than a fish of that caliber(truly a shame) just my opinion that's why I like that derby better than the rotary derby. the Kid said he was going to have it mounted, buy a new auger, and a new portable shanty. How cool is that??????????????
