Trailer Bearings

Bought boat & trailer new in 97. Have kept bearings well grease no sign of leaking, no slop in wheels when jacked up. Going into 12th season should I be pro-active & change repack? How long should they be OK? No salt water.

The daughter comes home for spring break, says.
Dad: I got a tattoo.
I: U did WHAT!
Kid: I got a Tat on my butt just above the bikini line. of a Top Gun Lure, Color Mickey Finn.
Me: Oh OK looks great!

Her mom says I want one what should I get?
I: Well u never been able to wear a bikini & U have enough room get a large mooselook wobbler, copper or silver.
Mom: Why those colors?
Me: Well at your age their going to end up with a wringle finish anyway.

Re: Trailer Bearings

Way Too Funny!!!

Trailer Bearings:
All depends on the mileage, I'm still on my original bearings bought trailer new also in 97. A good maintenance schedule go's a long way. Keep checking hubs for excessive heat when you get to the ramp, should be good to go!

Re: Trailer Bearings

You are a trip, Tatoos are in, even I have one (got it maybe 50 years ago though.

I'd grease the bearings fer sure, you only have to have one spin and/or burn once and you'll do em every year.

Have a nice Easter all,

Big John

Re: Re: Trailer Bearings

I would grease them and have at least one complete hub/bearing set up in case you get stuck on the side of the road you can get back on it quickly.polebreaker

Re: Re: Re: Trailer Bearings

I always pull my bearings twice a year and grease them - never lost one. I have been on 2 "rescue" missions for people who depended on the grease fittings on their bearing buddies. There is no substitute for regular bearing packing.

Re: Trailer Bearings

Do yourself a favor and pull off the wheel the cap cottor pin, washer and front bearing. Than slide off the hub. Clean up the front bearing with a rag and Use brake clean to finish her up than inspect the bearing. now check the seal on the back of the hub for wear. If its worn at all snap off the rear seal and now your rear bearing will pop out clean the same way as the front one, Check the races now in the hub after you clean her up and brake clean the livin s#%t out off it. If bearings look good all you need is the rear seal to replace. that can be tricky if your not carefull. I ended up with a complete set of bearing and hub tools from my buddy who works for matco tools and doing that job is a breeze for me, Saying goes right tool makes the job go easy. Here is a piece of mind I never had to do bearings on my great lakes boat only cleaning them like I explained and the only thing I replaced were the seals and repacked the bearings once a year due to the fact I tow likE crazy........ Hope this helps
