Where can I buy a gross of large smelt for the derby without paying $8.00 a dozen?

Try calling AJs to see what he'd give you for a quantity discount. His normal price is 7 bucks a dozen I believe.

Next step would be catching your own??

I believe he will give you 3 dozen for $20 or as Craig said $7 per dozen.

adding on to this. im not sure what the road is but there was a convenient store near melvin village that sold them last year, i dont remember the name or the road but i was coming from meredith. we are staying in melvin for the derby and just woundering if they are still around. i know its not much info but if you can think of and let me know, it would be appreciated!

I Think you are think of Skelleys (formely Dads market)? They are still there and selling bait. Not sure of the relative price. They are just North of the intersection of 109 and 171 in Moultonborough.

I've always wondered about catching my own smelt. Is it legal on a sportsman license to catch smelt? I know its big game on the river mouths but is it possible to catch smelt with a trap in Winni? Local (Moultonborough) rivers/streams?

I know in the summer Ican catch various type of shiners in a crayfish trap but I've never seen smelt
