We caught this 17 inch salmon on friday morning it was over 2.5 pounds, looked like it swallowed a nerf football, it was twice as wide as anything i ever saw. it was 4 years old and upon inspection it was full of eggs, more eggs than i have ever seen in any salmon in my life. John Viar said it was a genetic freak he calls a pupmkinseed, the genetic abnormality just didn't tell the salmon to spawn, the pumpkinseed condition happens to about 1 in 2000 at the hatchery and they are not very mobile from the start, usually getting eaten their first year in the lake by a bass or laker and it is very rare for one to reach 4 years old. Too bad it wasn't 20 inches long!!!
These are a couple pictures from charters the days before the derby.
