The last Salmon

My Dad Don Leathers radio handle ( Salmoneer) passed away yesterday afternoon after a long couragous battle with cancer. He was 77 years old.

My father had two passion in life in addisition to his faimly and my Mom who he was married too for 55 years. One was bird dogs and bird hunting and the other was fishing for Landlock Salmon. He frist started trolling Winni in the early 50s when he got out of the service after the Korean war. Back than they caught mostly lakers, Whitefish and the occasional salmon. West point on long island was a favorite spot and we used launch the 12 ft plywood boat he built at Harrilla landing and head out there or if it was windy at all we fished harrila bay or the bay on the other side of little bear island. No sonar, downriggers or gps back than we fished wire line that we count out a foot at a time too control the depth. In the 1960s he bought a lot on Cow Island and built the camp that we still own today.

In later years after he discover the internet he especialy enjoy this website and message board which he followed faithfully even thou the last few months he was unable too post becuase he could no longer type. He also very much enjoyed listening too and talking to all of you on the radio while fishing.

I remember the first Salmon I caught fishing with my Dad it was in the early 60s I was 7 or 8 years old. I caught it on a small silver super dupper which if you haven't seen one it looks lke a womens hair clip with a hook on it and it has about as much action too as one. This was the smallest salmon I have ever caught it was about 5" long but it was a salmon! I also remember the last salmon I caught with my Dad it was the last week of april this year, a perfect spring day we fished Meredith bay. He was pretty sick from chemo and everything else by than but he still made it out and we had a very good day catching a lot of nice fish. Towards the end of that afternoon we open a bottle of 18 year old Glen Levitt scotch I had bought along for the ocassion and we enjoyed that also. Those turned out too be the last salmon we caught together.
So later this week after everything is done I'm going to enjoy with my brothers the other half of that bottle of scotch I have been saving.
We will drink too all of the fishing, the hunting the birds dogs and all of the memories we have growing up the sons of such a great man that my father was.

One last thing "Salmoneer" is way too cool of a handle to just let go of so the LunaC will now become the Salmoneer.

I am very very sorry to hear this news, Your Dad always managed to talk to me on the radio when we both hit the pond the same day, I never got to meet him face to face but the conversations I have had with him were very special and I could tell he was not only a interesting Man but a person who loved the sport of Salmon fishing, You are doing a Great thing changing your handle to salmoneer. As some know here I carry The handle Charlies Charters from a close friend of mine that passed to cancer at the age of 32 he always said when he jumped on my boat that he was fishing on Charlies Charters I think of him whenever someone calls me on the radio. You will feel the same when the salmoneer is called across the smile of the great spirt.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. Your post hits close to home. He sounded like a great man who took the time to get his son's involved in the sports that he loved and had a passion for. Count yourself lucky that you were given a gift that you can enjoy and share with your children and grandchildren. Thank your dad every time you pick up you fishing rod or shotgun. Keep his memory alive.
