I got out trolling on the big lake for the first time since May with an old friend. We launched out of West Alton marina at 4:30AM after dodging rain storms all the way up from Manchester. The ride out was nice and smooth and the overcast all added up to a good prospect for the day.
When we got to our spot, we were the first there and quickly put out our spread as DOZENS of boats began arriving in the area. We started shallow with 3 colors and DRs down to 15 feet and within a few minutes, we boated a decent smallmouth. Minutes later one of our leadcore rods is hit so hard it pulled the inline planer board under water. After a long battle, I boated our largest salmon of the season. The fish pretty worn out from the battle and I wanted it to survive so I quickly got him back in the lake before we took measurements though I would guess the fish was about 23-24 inches and close to 5#. Soon after, we dropped the riggers to 35 and let out leadcore to 6 colors. We picked up a few lakers and a couple of rainbows before everything shutdown and almost all the other boats headed home for breakfast.
We hit another spot and hit a few more fish but it was pretty slow until around 2 when we rounded a point and got into a good school of fish. We landed a bunch of more bows, and a few salmon before we decided we were sunburnt enough and headed home just before the rain came in.
Great day on the water with a good friend. Fishing was good at times and slow at others. We had success with the white perch flies but they were picky on hardware and we threw almost everything at them. Orange seemed to be popular for salmon and bows and pink for lakers.
