Mark Jacobs po box 98901 lakewood, WA 98498 info@propagandapress.org To: senatorlott@lott.senate.gov Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott, I am concerned that the Republican Senate leadership is not allowing the Sudan Peace Act to go to conference committee. Last summer, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly (422-2) passed a bill -- dubbed the Sudan Peace Act -- that would bar oil companies operating in Sudan from American capital markets and help put an end to the on-going slave raids in southern Sudan. The Senate then unanimously (97-0) passed a version of the bill. The next logical step is for a House-Senate conference committee to hammer out a final version of the bill. Senator, the slave raids and destruction perpetrated by the Sudanese government against its own black African population is a crime against humanity. The stories of women and children abducted into bondage break my heart. The people of southern Sudan have been on the front lines of terror for nearly two decades. We must do everything we can to stop this. You can do your part by allowing the Sudan Peace Act to go to conference. An overwhelming majority of congressmen and senators -- in an unusual show of sweeping bi-partisanship -- want to see a version of this bill passed. The House named its conferees -- both Democrats and Republicans -- last year! Senate Democrats have twice tried to bring the bill to conference. I do not understand why the Senate Republican leadership is standing in the way of the democratic process. I implore you to do all you can to send the Sudan Peace Act to conference. Sincerely, Mark Jacobs
