John Douglass

hi trying to find the parents of John Douglass --they were either from Ireland or Scotland --there was a migration at some point; ship wrecked in Ireland on way to americas

John was born in Derry, Ireland, then settled in Quebec
John was married to Mary Snodgrass

children
Benjamin (born in Derry County, Ireland, moved at 17, and died in Quebec, age 80)
John (settled in NY, USA, died 1836)
Robert
Martha
Margaret
Ellen

I have more details on children ..but I will get to the point here
Benjamin had a son Arthur Douglas Sr. (1832-1914); Arthur Sr. settled in Ontario, Canada
Arthur had a son Arthur jr. (1884-1962)(Ontario)
Arthur's son Chasles Casson Douglas (1918-2012) --this is my father (Ontario)

Re: John Douglass

There seems to be conflicting evidence about John Douglas and Mary Snodgrass.

I have a note that John Douglass and Mary Snodgrass were both from Londonderry and married about 1789. They came to Philadelphia via Liverpool in 1804 on The Commerce. They eventually settled in Godmanchester Quebec.

from the passenger list:
John Douglass 38 farmer Seaford, Down
Mary Douglass 38 spinster Seaford, Down
It is said that their son John, b1804, sailed with them, but he is not on ths list.

You are probably aware of these details: http://www.swquebec.ca/pioneers/Families/douglass_john.html

Re: John Douglass

According to both my Great Aunt's documentation Robert and Mary had 6 children, which is backed up by Quebec Church records. The records note all 6 children as being born in Londonderry, Ireland. Since they did not go directly to Quebec in 1804 however, I expect Robert and possibly John were actually born in the US.

Ellen Douglass (1790 Londonderry, Ireland-Feb 1871 Huntingdon, QC)
Martha Douglass (Nov 1,1795 Londonderry, Ireland-Sept 1,1873 Huntingdon, QC)
Margaret Douglass (1798 Londonderry, Ireland-Sept 14,1870 Huntingdon, QC)
Benjamin Douglass (1801 Londonderry, Ireland-Dec 11,1877 Westville, NY)
John Douglass (Sept 30, 1804 Londonderry, Ireland-Aug, 23,1888 Westville, NY)
Robert Douglass (1805 Londonderry, Ireland-Feb 26,1881 Huntingdon, QC)

Arthur also had a son Robert (1874-1958) and brother to Arthur Jr. Robert married Margrette Pebbles and had an only child, Andrew Gordon Douglas (1911-1985).

My father was Andrew Gordon Douglas (May 28,1911 Sooke,BC-Mar 11,1985 Vernon,BC), his father was Robert Douglas (April 29,1874-Feb 24,1958), his father was Arthur Douglas (1832 Huntingdon-1914 Perth, ON), his father was Benjamin (1801 Derry, Ireland-Dec 11,1877 Westville, NY), his father was John Douglass (1762-1837) married to Mary Snodgrass (1860) in Derry Ireland.

I was told growing up that we are from the Black Douglas Clan originating from Scotland.

Re: John Douglass

I was wondering if Arthur Sr. had another son named John or Johnathan? My Great Grandfather Was John Douglass, and emigrated from Ontario to Michigan somewhere between 1911 (Canadian Census) and 1925. His wife Mary came with him. She was born in England.

I find no records with US immigration, but they magically appear on the 1930 census and lived in the "same place" as in 1925. Bay City, Michigan.

Thanks for any information you might have. I night be able to help with stuff on this side of the border.
