In 1545 the Earl of Hertford’s army devastated the valley of Rule Water, a tributary of the Teviot. In his letter to Henry VIII he lists the places in the valley burnt by his soldiers. Most names can be identified today but a couple do not seem to fit. One, DUPLIGIS, looks as though it might correspond to DOUGLAS, but there is no Douglas known in the valley of Rule. Is there a Tower which would have been known as Douglas nearby?
