You may be interested to know that back in the summer I was able to make a visit to the much loved Paderborne and Barker barracks!
I drove over via Dover-Dunkirk, and kept going until i reached Paderborn at about 10pm; doing over 500 miles!
I stayed at the Best Western near the town centre, and having walked around the town, (which has change beyond belief) the following morning, I then drove up to BB in the hope I would be let in!
I was given a REME L/Cpl who was on guard duty as an escort, and was able to stroll around for about half an hour.
Only the "other" gate is now in use, and the whole place was VERY quiet with hardly any troops or vehicles to be seen. I managed to take some photos, and visted the old 2HB block.
This had been referbished, but as the upstairs doors were locked I could not see very much.
I did however manage to go down to the Bombboat, but it was shut!!!
There is a new NAAFI behind the block on the left as you went in through our old gate. The squaddies now pay for their food there rather than having a cookhouse!
Luckily there was no sign of Joe!!!
It seems that the camp may close in the near future, but I have no idea what they will do with it!
Anyway, an interesting trip, and I also enjoyed a really good last evening on the "Pils" after a nice meal on the veranda overlooking the town!
The town is looking very smart, but several English people I spoke to said they didn't like the place!!
I did send some photos to Mick, so I don't know if he can put them up on this web site, or even if he has done so!
If anyone wants any pics by Email, please let me know!! Only fifty quid each - enjoy!!
