Carole Lombard/January 16, 1942

Carole Lombard died on January 16, 1942 when the plane carrying her and her mother collided with Mount Potosi near Las Vegas. She was on her way home from a war bond drive in her native Indiana. The U.S. Treasury Department had given her a quota of $500,000 to meet--Carole sold over $2,000,000. President Roosevelt awarded her the Medal of Freedom as the first woman killed in the line of duty in World War II. The President said of her, "she is and always will be a star, one that we shall never forget, nor cease to be grateful to." (copied)

I had not realized until now that her mother had died in the accident also.
