Re: Xaverian - worst team in Catholic Conference?

Former Hawk
Just looking up the Catholic Conference standings and not only is Xaverian last in the Catholic Conferencd, but they also don't have a single win in their Conference. They haven't had any trouble getting talented players. Is coaching the issue here?

Figure it out. X is a football school. If your kid is a talented hockey player you go to MC/BC/CM....its not rocket science.

Re: Xaverian - worst team in Catholic Conference?

When is coach Hanson taking over the varsity?

Fair enough, but let's elaborate on that point. Focusing just on hockey, why is it that these kids are going to MC/BC/CM for hockey rather than a Xaverian?

Reputation and tradition. Same reason why blue chip hockey college recruits migrate towards BC/BU. If you are a stud football player you go to Alabama not BC.

Couldn't agree more. Now who would you say is responsible for establishing and maintaining that reputation and tradition? Bear in mind that Xaverian was not always a football powerhouse, and CM used to be the premier school for football back a couple decades.

You need a coach and administration that stress they want to be a powerhouse program. Coach has to be recruiting players and admin has to be on board getting the recruit into school. You have to be aggressive and get the stud players that put programs over the top. Once you start winning consistently players come. Malden Catholic was an afterthought until a few years ago and look at them now - because they win. You have to support the program and get first class facility/uniforms/etc....it shouldnt matter but it does.

Re: Xaverian - worst team in Catholic Conference?

It's breaking the rules to build. MC and AP went out and legit recruited their teams. it's no secret in the hockey coaching world. X had over 90 kids at tryouts. kids are going there but they aren't getting the top end talent. Why. Look around. BCH and CM
for years got the best of the city talent because where else were they goignt o go. a few to thayer, Sebs and archies but a ton to those two schools. X is out on the fringe near good towns with competitive HS programs. Especially in this day and age when you need to play 2 years of juniors is there really a reason to leave Westwood or Canton or a Baystate team. Good at other sports, competitive leagues and they compete. Economics factors in. Why pay the money. Sure X is a great school but honors classes at a good public get you into a good college as well. It's not coaching or any one factor. it's a bunch. MC cheated. Hey it paid off but you need admin and coachign ready to do it

Re: Xaverian - worst team in Catholic Conference?

It's quality and consistency in coaching, relating to the players and recruiting; you need all three. It is helpful to be able to move kids along to quality Jr. programs and get college coaches to look at your kids.

Look at all of the high school programs and you tell me if the ones that can deliver on all points - coaching, relating to players, recruiting and finding spots for kids...how have they done recently?

disagree with AP but agree with MC. AP draws local talent since the 70s, 80s and 90s. I don't recall much MC success in 80s and 90s. Local talent pool at this time chose SJP, AC and Matignon over MC, IMO.

Re: Xaverian - worst team in Catholic Conference?

The top 4-5 C.C. schools recruit. If they don't, they will either not be very good or they will learn how to. Basically the process as I've seen it firsthand is you pull in a few 'assistant coaches' and they spread out a bit to various programs and summer teams to identify what is basically middle school talent. They approach the kid with promises and have them tour the school and the financial aid office. Coach does the meet & greet and off you go!

They all recruit and have been for years. Why wouldn't they. They have no border constraints, so they don't have to find a "relative" that lives in town to sell a kids residence to the MIAA(See Everett Football/basketball for details.)The diffencce is X and SJP still have acedemic integrity, so its much tougher to sneak a kid on athletic skills alone. MC, AP, BCH, and CM don't have those problems AND they do a good job of getting kids looks at the Jr/College ranks. Really not much of a mystery. My only question is what the heck happened to Matignon? Apparently they got left behind on both fronts.

Re: Xaverian - worst team in Catholic Conference?

My son goes to a Catholic conference school. We were 100% recruited. Given a very sweet financial aid package. School never would've been on our radar If it hadn't been for the coach calling me. We don't qualify for financial aid yet we pay hardly anything.

Xaverian has a solid team this.....just not scoring goals. It is time for a coaching change. The younger varsity players will leave after this season now.
