Proof of the pudding is in the eating

After three months to look, D1 programs have turned up their noses en masse at what NCDC is offering. Since September, more than 100 players committed to D1 hockey teams. During that same time, NCDC committed next to none. Reports that NCDC pre-season hype and promotion was "hot air" are looking like the right call.

Can NCDC turn this absolute drubbing around, or has NCDC already entered the dreaded downward spiral?

Look at the College Hockey Inc website. The number is much closer to 200 DI commits since the beginning of September than the 100 number that was posted.

Your point is that NCDC's showing against NAHL, BCHL, etc is even worse for the NCDC than the numbers reflect. I agree.

Is he your nephew? 'Cause only a relative would think he is trending positively after finishing last year in the WSHL. I don't think I've ever seen someone start in Tier I, drop through II into III in the course of one season.

But, his uncle would know he does have a commitment to Quinnipiac, at least for now.

Jeff Cox had him on his list of "Top Uncommitted Players" at the Fall Beantown Cla$$ic, so he's not committed to Quinnipiac. My guess is there had to be some shady backroom deals that saw him bounce around. He did great in the NAHL, and while it's not quite the USHL, it's light years ahead of the garbage he's playing in now.

The storyline you got lost on is that had DeRoche played USHL, BCHL, NAHL, CCHL, AJHL, anywhere but NCDC, he would have committed right out of the gate THIS season (August-September), not at the end of November as he just did. NCDC is never never land Tier III hockey - not a real JR hockey league. No one follows it. They may get ten friends and family to come to the rink to watch a game. The fact that DeRoche was able to commit is nothing short of a miracle.

The empty rinks? Just go to HockeyTV and watch a NCDC game. Can you count ten fans?

The commits. Look at the USHL, BCHL, NAHL, CCHL, AJHL, commits listed on CollegeHockeyInc.

How NCDC stacks up against other leagues, talk to any college hockey coach, or, alternatively, look at the lack of NCDC commits on CollegeHockeyInc.

It is clear that NCDC is below the other leagues (as far as commitments go ) mentioned but it seems to be better then the Tier 3 leagues. Where it goes from here is anybody's guess. Time Will Tell.

DeRoche's height had nothing to do with Quinnipiac dropping him. It was his attitude. He burned so many bridges in his 19 years that Quinnipiac wanted nothing to do with him. At the end of last season, he was number 10 on his NAHL team in scoring despite only playing 20 or so games with them and probably was their leading scorer in all the games after he arrived, but the coach sent him down to the NA3 and he later refused to report. If he weren't such locker room cancer, he'd be a Bobcat by now.

I was referring to the lack of facts in statements by the haters, like this one.

And none of the haters have ever been able to come up with a reasonable, logical response to this:

There is ZERO downside to the NCDC taking this step for local hockey players. But, it's in its third month. Chances are, all other things being equal, a kid with an opportunity in the NAHL is going to to take it over NCDC (I don't count the Generals, that's juts BA Juniors now). The league is having a positive impact for local players, it is gaining the better players - like the above poster's kid - notice. College coaches and scouts are following it - players and parents are seeing them, talking to them. We can keep throwing facts out there about kids in the league getting commits, and the haters are just going to keep making dick-swinging statements like:

NCDC is never never land Tier III hockey - not a real JR hockey league. No one follows it.

And nothing said is going to change that. So, why bother?

By the time they're in Juniors, the number of clueless parents has dropped precipitously. Yes, the clubs still lie, but the parents are far less delusional.

Nope. Not USHL, the Colorado College commit is a US High School student. College Hockey Inc says is was Jackson Jutting, a 2001 Minnesota public High School player. Free public high school hockey. Congratulations to Jackson!

Having been through this myself, the thing I don't understand is if the kid is interested in playing D-1 college hockey then why on God's earth do all of the local kids hang around New England waiting to see if they're good enough and doing time in lesser leagues hoping for someone to notice them?

Play in the Tier1 League, go to the summer camps out in the Midwest (a hint here: their camps are a lot cheaper than the ones around here!), meet the coaching staffs from the USHL teams when you're a Peewee or Bantam, try to fill-out the Midwest's team's rosters in tournaments here or there, create an ongoing dialog. The connected parents (ex-NHL'ers, D-1 legacy kids, NHL front office guy's kids....) they all get it. It just seems like the geographic divide is treated like it's the size of the Atlantic ocean. If you're serious about hockey then spend some time where it will be rewarded.

It's because NE hockey has an unrealistic view of where it ranks nationally. We've done the thinks you talk about - and had a blast doing so - and all you ever hear or read is "money grab."

It isn't. The things you talk about are great experiences, a lot better than playing exclusively local with the exception of the occasional tournament.

Any parent of a better than average kid should take a look at doing a summer camp of one of the programs that have an USHL team or one that draws Tier1 kids. Does this mean the kid will someday play out there? No, but at least the kid will get to see the lay of the land. Some of these camps are a couple hundred dollars a week....the local hockey people here wouldn't bother turning the lights on at the rink for what these guys charge and a few family days in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago...not so bad.

Are you saying the NCDC, while not up to the level of the NAHL, is a actually a better league than NA3HL? How so? Both NA3HL and NCDC are developmental leagues. Neither NA3HL or NCDC is Tier 2. Both NA3HL and NCDC are intermediate steps to Tier 2 or Tier 1.

Other than personal opinion, in what way is NCDC supposedly a better league than NA3HL?

You can reorganize and rename all you want but you have to have the players. Players earn D1 opportunities, not leagues. D1 spots are more competetive than ever with all of the players they are now recruiting from Canada and Europe. The pyramid gets tighter and tighter. A smarter play for this league is to focus on northeast D3 placements. Taking on T1 and the USHL just isn't a winning strategy.

You are right. There are many equally good alternatives besides NCDC to get to D3. But NCDC marketed itself as "one path" to college hockey. NCDC's record thus far is for all intents and purposes, that means D3 or below. But yes, NCDC competes with high school, midget and all other junior leagues for D3 roster spots.

The question is whether NCDC can continue if equally good alternatives present themselves in high school midget and other junior leagues. Can it justify its expense to those that pay to support it.

Your kid is clearly an EHF disciple that woke up one day when he was 16 and realized that him being "elite" all those years meant nothing.

Sorry your kid got cut from the Generals.

Problem is much bigger than one kid with sour grapes for not making a legit USA Hockey JR league team.

NCDC took a huge risk shunning USA Hockey. USA Hockey's counter punch may be putting the shun on NCDC. NCAA D1 depends too much on USA Hockey's USHL and NAHL players to let rogue NCDC upset that apple cart. From the looks of NCDC's in season commits, one could think the NCAA D1 shun is on for players foolish enough, like NCDC, to shun Big Brother USA Hockey.

NCDC has to make peace with USA Hockey, and for the sake of its players, it better do it soon.

I was at both Titans- Generals games last weekend. That is what real junior hockey is. The Generals really made it special for the players with a top-notch presentation. The stands were packed and scouts were practically hanging off the rafters. Few overage players. Fast and physical play all game long. Take in a Generals game and then drive up 128 to Foxboro and see the difference.

For the NCDCers, is the plan to rejoin USA Hockey next season? Any hints on direction from the front office?

It isn't that they didn't join, USA Hockey refused to grant Tier II status because of the funding model. That isn't going to change, so NCDC has no choice but to stay the course.

I also haven't heard any of the "taxed" parents complaining, though. They don't even know they're being charged extra.

But, I sincerely doubt USA Hockey is going to acknowledge that.
