Why in god's name would they get rid of the best part of their program? Class guy, great coach. They were lucky to have him!
That school is a D3 or Atlantic level school whose coach was able to make them competitive in the Beast that is the Hockey East. He did more with less.
My guess is the school was disappointed in the recruiting efforts and wanted him to make an asst the fall guy. Strangely it happened hours after the last game of the season. Must have been known to him already!!
I hope he is the next head coach at BC and goes on a York like run.
JC says RG was behind it...
Nice guy and class act, but you have to win at the D1 level or you don't just get to stay as long as you want.
5 straight losing seasons, 1 NCAA appearance in 13 years and a .424 win pct usually gets you canned at some point
Especially when the money man says so..
They should go after Belisle from umass Boston. He's got the pedigree and has already built a program from scraps to a national contender.
What a shame. He did a great job with the tools he had. Rink/facilities and school are not good enough to draw Blue Chip players that are looking at BC, BU, UNH, Northeastern, etc....The top players are getting offers from all of those schools....why would you pick Merrimack if you had a choice? Good luck to MD, he will land on his feet and in a better situation. Give the guy a good quality school/degree and great hockey facilities and watch him take off. Good Luck!
All I'm saying is you're not getting the top talent to go there. Not a chance. I'll give you the Union example, they caught lightning in a bottle for sure... but St. Cloud? Come on man, that's a historic hockey destination in MINNESOTA, you can not compare them to Merrimack.
Providence used to be a comp. Not anymore and not just because of Leaman. Have you been on that campus lately? It's at a whole new level in all aspects of a University that will attract kids from anywhere. Also PC basketball evelvates the school much more than hockey which Merrimack has no answer for.
Merrimack is the toughest D1 school in the Northeast to recruit to without comparison. Not only are the facilities terrible, but there is no campus. Even places like Union, UMASS Amherst, Maine and UNH have great campuses with traditional college party scenes. Merrimack has Fudrcukers and Bertuccis.
It's a great school for rich dumb kids though.
