Not many New England players selected, 02' must be a week age group.
So what does all of these drafts mean? Are these kids really going to play there?
Was this a futures draft where the teams get the player if the want to play USHL in the future?
I understand my kid will not get there... just interested in knowing how it works.
Futures mean they get to protect 10 kids for two years. Then it goes down to like 2or 4. So most will never play for the club they are drafted by. Whether they do or not depends on are they good enough, do they want to play out there, and when they intend on playing out there. NE kids are risky because they are less likely to go than kids from elsehwere so that is probably the biggest reason why NE kids are not picked as frequently or as high as other kids.
They draft 10 this year, protect for a full year.
Next year they can only protect 6/10.
Year after only 2/10.
So many of these kids, unless they make the team next fall or the following fall, will be dropped and likely drafted again in the phase ii draft in a couple of years.
There are a number of 98's and 99's being drafted today who were drafted in the phase 1 draft three years ago but never played out there for various reasons.
RM drafted? Thanks daddy.
What a joke
So, I'm a little lost (no big surprise)...If a player is drafted by either USHL or NAHL, are they 'protected' and cannot play for another team? Or if a player is undrafted, can he tryout and play for any team (if, of course he makes the team). Does the draft protected list last for more than one year? Just feeling this out...
There is some limited info on the USHL website: https://www.ushl.com/draft
I actually think this website has more helpful info: http://juniorhockeytruth.com/ushl/
USHL teams have a protected and affiliate lists. These lists prevent you from playing on any other T1 or T2 team. It does not impact playing TIII or Junior A in Canada.
The protected list is primarily made up of kids from last years team and those drafted in the recent Phase 2 draft. These are kids looking to make the club for next season. The current list today going into the tryout camps are at 40 and then have to be pared town to 30 in July and 23 by the start of the USHL season.
Affiliate lists are kids from the futures draft. That list containst 20 kids. This year the affiliate list will be for the most part:
Ten - 02's just drafted
Eight 01's from last years draft
Two - 00's from previous
It's not always the case because some kids are dropped and replaced by kids from the Phase II draft but generally this is what you will see.
If a player is undrafted he can tryout for any team.
