Re: Cost for U16 and U18

Split around 1500
Full around 6-8k
Why so much for full season

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

I have experience with one full season team and they were a little over 8K and also needed a credit card on file for travel expenses , hotel food etc .

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

At least 20K all in

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

At least 20? Come on.

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

Don’t spend more than 6 if team doesn’t have dedicated locker room and extra ice outside of practice

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

Add in EVERY single dollar spent. Especially travel. Planes, hotels, car mileage.

From some last year, it was well past 20k

Like i said about $10k. $7,500 tuition. So far a few over nights about $350 a weekend all in. Schedule allows for one night hotel. A couple of longer trips will be about $750 each. Yeah i guess it will be about $11k.

9K all in. The best decision my son made. Prep is a waste of money. High School Hockey is a waste of time.

Its not that prep is a waste of time but if your high school is decent academically and th fs program is strong it may be a better option overall. Either coukd be a great experience.

That's because you're thinking about Prep from a hockey perspective. That isn't what it's about. I know it's a running joke here that nobody chooses Prep for the academics, but if you aren't thinking about the academics first and what that does for his opportunities in college, you aren't looking at it right.

A prep school isn't going to pay for his college. Sorry, he isn't that type of person who excels in the classroom. Wish he was, but he isn't. Those college possibilities are still there for non prep students as well. Like I said, Prep is a waste of money. I'll save that money for his college tuition.

That's like saying "buying a Porsche is a waste of money. My Camry does the same thing."

Or, "buying a house is a waste of money. I rent a two bedroom. Keeps us warm and dry."

There is absolutely nothing wrong with those choices. Doesn't mean another set of choices is wrong.

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

My son goes to a good private D3 college. Half the kids there are prep students. He was public. So explain to me the value of the prep education again if the kid is middle road academics?

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

So you wasted money for a prep school education to put your kid in a so called good private D3 school to chase a hockey dream that was done after high school. Not a wise decision if you ask me. I bet that private school is unheard of outside of the New England area. How much debt is the kid racking up for this D3 private school education?

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

Notice how I asked how much debt your kid is racking up. I asked that question because I bet you you are tapped out after spending all that money on Prep, which in the end, got him no further than the public school kid he is sitting by in class.

Why would you feel it's necessary to make the same point twice in 17 minutes. People could see it the first time.

I'm genuinely sorry you don't understand that people are in very different situations in life. Your reality isn't everyone's reality. What you see as a waste of money is through the lens of your own economic situation. To feel better about yourself you apparently have to point out the error of other people's decisions.

Trust me on this, I can afford Prep School. And college. And I got there with a public school education and student loans. It is by no means impossible.

But I wouldn't change the decisions I made for my kids' educations. They have advantages that will benefit them their entire lives. And I don't mean $$$. Money doesn't define success. I look at how much more mature they are, how articulate they are, how much better they are at critical thinking, at the better choices they make. No matter what they do, those building blocks will help them.

Does every kid in Prep School get that? Nope. Does every kid in public school lack those things? Nope. But I'd say the odds are way better.

I get what you are saying. But, I don't agree with the Prep school reasoning you are giving here. I don't think a Prep school education is worth it for an athlete. You do.

He isn't there yet - this is the HS Board, not the College Board. But his choice of college will be the same as the decision on going to Prep School - which school provides the environment and infrastructure where he will thrive academically and socially, as well as allowing him to continue his hockey career?

If you think here's no difference between a class of 30 and a class of 6 in HS then you probably think there's no difference between a lecture hall of 250 and a class of 15 in college. It's not that there aren't jobs out there after kids graduate. Traditional learning doesn't prepare kids for the real world. So it becomes a GPA contest, which isn't the same as learning. Companies requires a different skill set. One that more closely resembles what "D-III" schools offer.

And, the point that small NE colleges are only known in NE has been made before and roundly rejected. Kids from Williams and Wesleyan are not only top picks by top companies across the country, but top picks by top Grad schools across the country. Most "D-I" schools are known to most Americans because of football or basketball success. If you ask the average person about the academic reputation of different D-I schools, very few will know which are good and which are bad.

But, to answer your question about how much debt, well, ummmm, zero? Paying for education is my job as his dad. He commented on that last week, about how he knows how lucky he is that he will never have to worry about student loans. What I've already asked him in return is that he do the same for his kids.

This brings me to my next point. You don't need a prep school education to be a good student. There are thousand of kids who didn't need a prep school education to be successful in life or working at Fortune 500 companies. Me included. From my point of view, prep schools are and will always be a waste of money. In the end, it is upto the individual to determine how successful they will be in life. Not the institutions they attended.

As for my kids. 3 college tuitions paid for in full. All from a person who didn't attend a Prep school.

The point was made in a similar thread that even at $15,000 Prep School isn't worth it. So, let me carry it over to this thread.

If you had a chance to send your kid to Prep School for $15K because of hockey, would you take it?

The Porsche is a perfect analogy. You get to drive it for four years. Trust, me, you'll enjoy driving more. And after four years, yes, you have a used car, just like the Camry owner. But, you've had a better experience, and odds are it's going to be worth more. So, it provides a better overall return.

After 8500 tuition, if you don't think you spend over 10K on total expenses between late Aug and early March, I don't think you've done it..

Car mileage alone is an easy $5k. Add in 3-4 plane trips/hotels/4 day weekends, and it's well over $20k total..

Add in food on the road and other expenses specifically for hockey.

It's a ton of hidden costs.

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

ok-but the OP asked for tuition costs-not dining expenses, rental cars and hotel bills which I'm sure can add up rather quickly if you take the whole family to showcases.

Re: Cost for U16 and U18

Yes. But Tuition is just a portion of the total out of pocket expenses to play FS 16/18.

Just go in with eyes and wallet wide open.
