How old is your kid?

The average age for kids getting commitments is 18.9 years old.

The new rules are to end the lunacy of parents thinking their kid is getting a commitment that means anything - or needs one - at 14/15/16.

If your kid is good enough that he is getting a real verbal at 16, they will find you.

4% of kids under the CURRENT rules are getting commitments at 14/15. If your kid is in the top 4%, you don't need to reach out to anyone. They WILL find you. Trust me on that.

If he's in the 96%, they don't WANT to talk to you. This is what will change under the new rules. Actually, they didn't wanted to talk to you before. They just felt like they HAD to.

Have your kid develop. Then have him play high level junior. That's what they are going to tell you is the path anyway. When he's 17/18/19 and playing USHL/NAHL/Junior A, the path will be amazingly clear to you.

We all read this stuff about the ridiculous parents that think if their kid doesn't have a commitment by 16 he isn't playing college hockey. And, somehow, every parent thinks everyone is talking about someone else.

If you're a parent and think you have to reach out to college and junior coaches when your kid is 15, 16 even 17, guess what? The ridiculous parent is YOU. He's going to be playing junior until he's 20 anyway. It's just the way it is, and it isn't changing any time soon.

The best time to get the best deal for college is when he's playing his best hockey at the highest level. And he isn't doing that at 16.

Do you have experience in moving kids up the ranks or are you just another dad with another opinion you read on the internet? You sound convincing but so does everyone on here. If your kid wants to send some emails, let him, no harm in it.
Well, since you asked, yes I do. We have been through three fourths of the process, and I can tell you that emailing coaches doesn't work. We tried, and it didn't open any doors even though we had good connections.

And the answer from every college coach we've talked with was, go play junior, we'll come see you.

No, there isn't any harm, except that your kid will be discouraged when he doesn't get replies. If that's okay then fine.

In the end, you want your kid to be recruited, not the other way around. That only happens if they see him play.

Did they ask where he played before? Just curious if it really matters where a 16-17 year old plays if they have to go to Juniors anyways, and did he go to USHL/NAHL or some other league. Again, just curious because it sounds like it makes the most sense.

It doesn't matter where you played before. It matters how you play at the T1 or Junior A level. If you do well, you can play at the NCAA level. If not, they will drop you or just keep pushing you out until you decommit. USHL is the great equilizer. Can't hide out there.

The poster at 2:56 answered it pretty well. They don't care where you played.

Neither do the higher level junior teams. You don't get in on your resume. You get in if you can play.

And, by higher level junior, I mean EHL (D-III feeder league), NAHL, Junior A, and of course USHL.

Tell your kid to work hard, on the ice and off. Your job is to find the best people to work with, and of course, pay for it all.

The rest will take care of itself, based on how much he maximizes his ability.

What's the purpose of the emails? They can reach out to you via advisors or your kids coaches so you would still know if there was interest out there.
It is an introductory email to coaches with some spring/summer, next year information. Everyone says to start early.
