NE/MA Regionals

Nationals autobids on the line...

U15 NE - SKSA win 5-2 over MSC
U15 MA - Whalers win 7-2 over Flames

Still being played...
U16 NE - MSC vs. MMJR
U16 MA - Eagles vs. NVRR
U18 NE - MSC vs. Yale
U18 MA - Senators vs. Eagles

Interesting MSC with 3 teams in finals in year 1. Only Eagles have 2 other finalists. Still can get into Nationals with an at-large bid but winning Districts takes a lot of the pressure off the rest of the year.

Re: NE/MA Regionals

Mass U18
Boston Jr. Eagles 6, Eastern Mass Senators 5
U18 loaded. Eagles best team, lots of strong players. Senators (Cushing) also strong, knocked off Little Bruins (KUA, etc.) and played Eagles tough. Will be some at large bids to nationals from this group.

Mass U16
NV River Rats 5, Boston Jr. Eagles 3
Rats knock off star-studded Eagles. Rats goalie really good. What happened to Whalers?

Mass 15
Cape Cod Whalers 6, Minuteman Flames 2
Lackluster division. Whalers easily best team, some strong players going prep. Rats and Wizards disappoint.

New England U18
Mount St. Charles 4, Northern Cyclones Prep 1
Yale fizzles. South Kent not that good after losing top players to Jrs. and Mount. Nice run by Cyclones. Congrats to Mount U18, probably least heralded of Mount teams and only one to win Regionals.

New England U16
Mid-Fairfield 5, Mount St. Charles 2
Great run by MFR, beating South Kent and Mount. Interestingly, Rats beat MFR twice this season. With strong core of 04’s, MFR early pick to be top U16 split season team next season.

New England 15
South Kent 5, Mount St. Charles 2
Mount is a very good team, but can’t beat rival South Kent. South Kent U15 impressive, especially on PP (love little D-man running point), will compete for national championship against very strong Michigan U15 teams, where U15-aged players can’t play up in U16. USA Hockey to apply Michigan rule to everyone next season?

Will be interesting to see if any New England or MA teams can pick up 1 of the 4 at-large bids available in each age group. Last year, with Yale winning NE division, South Kent and Mid Fairfield qualified with at large bids. Have to think Mount U16 and U15 teams will have a shot for at-large bids.

I know they're pretty arbitrary and up to the committee based off record, strength of schedule, rankings, etc. Anyone know when those are announced? I'm guessing not until Feb/March?

Re: NE/MA Regionals

The Nationals at large bids come out in March, typically after the other regions’ qualification tournaments that take place in March. Mass/New England, along with MN, are the only ones decided in the fall because of the split season model. The at large bids follow myhockeyrankings pretty closely, but not exactly.

If bids were decided today, Mount 15’s would likely get last bid. Mount 16’s would make it, and South Kent has good shot.

Re: NE/MA Regionals

have to consider who is and isn't eligible for Nationals.
Gentry is not eligible (at least they weren't last year) and at certain age groups/levels, MN Blades usually aren't eligible.

last year, Whalers and Rats both made it at U15, and Yale/South Kent at U18, so definitely it's possible....but it's almost a guarantee that 2-3 Michigan teams get at-large bids in most age groups.

Coaching change @ SKS U16 after an early exit this weekend.

Not qualifying for Nationals last year coupled with seeing Yale in the finals last year and being beaten by MFR this year in New Englands, 2 teams in their backyard, certainly hurt his credentials. Guess it shows they couldn't just try to emulate what the coaches who left did.

Re: NE/MA Regionals

Hutcheon is a solid guy. He did well with the 15s and will do well with the 16s until they find whomever they need to find in Operations, Coaching, wherever.

He is not the coach of the 15s. He was moved to 18s.

Re: NE/MA Regionals

What happened to the CC Whalers? Neither team made it past Saturday?
