Prep Quarantine

Be careful at upcoming Tnmt s the prep quarantine police will be out in full force. Is it worth losing your financial aid if you get caught not in compliance?

Re: Prep Quarantine

LOL I suspect this is the same pot stirrer that has been taking shots at prep in different ways throughout this pandemic. I hope you are charging them rent for how much space they take up in your head. Most campuses are locked down so unless they sneak out, I think they will be fine. If its that important my guess they risk being told to stay home and go remote.

So, you decided your post we SOOOO brilliantly conceived as a reply in the Prep thread that you felt it deserved its own post?

How DO you live with yourself and all that brilliance?

Re: Prep Quarantine

Yeah, you think kids are going to risk getting kicked off campus to go play in a tournament that nobody can watch when they are on campus lifting and skating at their own schools now? Let us know how the Beast Tournaments are! Our guess, lonely.

They'll just wear a funny nose and glasses to the tournament.

Re: Prep Quarantine

Kids wont run the risk. Too much to lose. Sorry dads, need to find something else to entertain you this weekend. I know, it sucks

Re: Prep Quarantine

how many prep hockey players value their academics over hockey..will 1 yr training w. out enough real competition get them to the next level.. take away NE prep hockey for 1 year and repercussions will be huge.

Re: Prep Quarantine

1 year of getting bigger, more personal coaching time and working on skills will have huge repercussions for these prep kids. Everyone is in the same boat so they are not loosing anything. Tier III New England hockey is tempting but we will take our chances at a top 10 prep program.

Re: Prep Quarantine

Huge risk if the quarantine cops catch you. Could be life changing. Not a great gamble. Look at it this way, the 3 or 4 dads that make the Monday morning post tournament calls ( same calls since mites) will find others to recap the meaningless games to. Just think how much more productive your day will be.

Re: Prep Quarantine

For my family, academics first, already told the coach no out of state tournaments unless the school changes it's policy.

Re: Prep Quarantine

We considered leaving Prep when all this talk about Covid and no hockey season happened, even flew out to USHL camp and was offered a spot( top 9 F minutes was the pitch) but very happy we decided to stay the course, already been on the ice 3 times in 5 days, coaches getting quality time with players to work on player specific needs, new workout schedule has been put in place, and classes are all in person. All wins for my son #staythepath

It’s a Prep school with a great history of moving hockey players onto the next level. Schools like KUA, Cushing, Avon, Salisbury and Dexter. In the 80s/90s these schools didn’t offer much in academics so old people think those schools only focus on sports and not academics. They would be blown away by seeing the classes these kids are taking. Oh, and they are still hockey powerhouses!

We put Cushing on our short list...how hard is it to get into? I heard it was not as easy SSAT wise. Do you know what they look for in terms of percentages?

Use SSAT as 1 part of enrollment process, so if your kid is good academically and athletically Cushing is a great spot him, he will be treated very well. As for academics, here is a list of options, If this isn't "strong" enough for your kid I don't know what to tell you, looks strong to me? Yes its in the middle of nowhere, but aren't they all? Compare the athletic opportunity with the academic opportunity and its hard to beat.

Are you for real?

A list of academic offerings indicates the academic rigor? If Cushing works for your kid that’s great, but is is not (in the context of prep schools) a academically demanding school. The rest like location, student diversity etc is personal preference.

I never realized how true it is that prep school are so different and you need to find the one that fits you until I went through the search process with my first kid. On paper they all look great, pretty and offer a wealth of opportunities. That’s why visit are so important, take a tour, talk to teachers, students, coaches. Only then you can tell.

You are exactly right. Except for the campus tour part, currently not allowed, as I understand it.

Most parents don't understand how important it is that the school fit your kid's specific needs. They pick a school based on location, aid, hockey, whatever, and don't consider the rest.

We chose a school that we felt our kid would thrive in. We absolutely talked hockey, but no promises. At the time he was enrolling, the (Keller Division) team had a not-so-good record. His advisor (one of the unpaid ones) said he could get him a Varsity spot at a top Eberhart Division school with a really good coach focused on development.

But, it wasn't a good fit academically - far more structured, more rote memorization than experiential learning.

Well, his school recruited a bunch of D-I commits, they went to the Elite 8 two of his four years there, and because we didn't have a promise in our pocket, he lost out due to numbers. Lesson learned.

But, he did absolutely great there academically, artistically and socially. He figured out what he wants to do with his life, he gained confidence and poise because he was in his "element" and he was accepted to 7 of 8 schools he applied to, including two NESCAC schools.

Hockey? His path ended up being more difficult, and as a result of his hard work he's probably ahead of where he would have been if he had played Varsity all four years - playing junior, getting interest from colleges. Half the guys that played his position are out of hockey or playing Club because they didn't develop enough as bottom-half players playing a three-month school season.

A lot of parents don't know Jack about the private schools they are looking at, and are focused on the wrong things.

Don't be like Jack.

Re: Prep Quarantine

I bet you're the parent with several "elite" school bumper stickers on their car thinking it impresses the people behind you.

Ssat 65-99 percentile
47 percent admission rate - or maybe higher due to lack of international application this year. Otherwise 33 percent of student body is international (mostly Chinese?)

No but I’m finding it hilarious that there are people that get a kick out of trolling boards about KID hockey. It’s a 50/50 chance of getting a thread that actually has solid information here. Hoping this thread actually answers. Or should I start a thread asking a specific question? I just don’t want to come off as pretentious. Looking for a prep school. Above average hockey player though not the best I’m sure. A/B student.

Re: Prep Quarantine

Take it for what its worth, my experience has been, advisor or no, there are a lot of guys involved in this process and its all about helping everyone justify their existence. Advisors, coaches, schools. Its all a big circle of guys helping each other make money. Schools make money off of every application so coaches want to get you in to apply. Advisors will use their buddies to help them out making it look like they had something to do with a visit you could have setup on your own with about 10 seconds work. Your kid still has to apply and get by their admissions department. Schools like cushing are easier to get into period but also very competitive from a hockey perspective. Ask them how many lines they go with each season and look at their roster and how many they are graduating (its all easy info to find). If my kid was on a 5 line team I would hope he would be on the top line, after that I would worry a lot about how much time he would get on the ice. A few schools out there like that and I think the most important part is being honest with yourself about who your child is. None of the people in the process will be honest with you. It does not serve their best interest.

I would take a look at this: https://www.neutralzone.net/prep-mens/teams/
It gives you a good idea of teams in each division. Typically it is very hard to gain a spot from JV to Varsity as the Varsity coach usually will hand pick the kids he wants on that team, all others will fall to Varsity B or JV. Good luck, its a rat race.

List of AP courses at one of the local catholic schools. They offer 19 so why only 12 at Cushing? Please don't tout the strength of the academics when they're mediocre at best. If Cushing wants you they will get you in regardless of SSAT and put your kid in some basic classes so they remain eligible to play.

They still don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t offer much for academics, there what you call a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"a pulse school\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" meaning all you need is a pulse to get in.

List of AP courses at one of the local catholic schools. They offer 19 so why only 12 at Cushing? Please don\\\'t tout the strength of the academics when they\\\'re mediocre at best. If Cushing wants you they will get you in regardless of SSAT and put your kid in some basic classes so they remain eligible to play.

The difference is the other kids in the classes. If the school has other kids of similar academic ability and motivation as your bender then things will be fine because classes will move at the right pace for him. At a school like Cushing your brainy hockey player may be too smart for the normal level classes taken by the "dumb" hockey players but will be left in the dust by the hyper-motivated Chinese kids who dominate the AP classes. Most prep schools are small so there can be a lack of academic diversity (is that a term?), meaning there are below average intelligence athletes and way above average international kids but not many above average local kids who fit in the middle. Some schools have that middle but schools at the academic bottom like Cushing and at the academic top like Andover seem to be all top and bottom with no middle. If your kid is a local public school A student (maybe a couple of Bs) then he probably scores 75th-90th percentile on the SSAT and you might want to check out the schools that list that range as their average because you are more likely to find that middle.

And by the way, that list of classes isn't impressive. Most public high schools offer similar classes nowadays. The difference is academic rigor because the class can only cover the subject with the depth and speed that the students can handle. My kids got a C in an AP class at prep and scored a 4 on the AP exam. His friends from our local public got As in the same AP class and scored 2s on the AP exam. Your local public school A student may be a B/C student when his classmates are from overseas.

They still don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t offer much for academics, there what you call a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"a pulse school\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" meaning all you need is a pulse to get in.

AP Calculus is different from 1 school to another? Explain
List of AP courses at one of the local catholic schools. They offer 19 so why only 12 at Cushing? Please don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t tout the strength of the academics when they\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'re mediocre at best. If Cushing wants you they will get you in regardless of SSAT and put your kid in some basic classes so they remain eligible to play.

Again, explain the difference between taking the same AP course at Cushing vs AP course at your school of choice? Now compare the hockey coaching at Cushing vs your school of choice? Compare the facilities at Cushing vs your school of choice? Mic drop, you lose
The difference is the other kids in the classes. If the school has other kids of similar academic ability and motivation as your bender then things will be fine because classes will move at the right pace for him. At a school like Cushing your brainy hockey player may be too smart for the normal level classes taken by the \"dumb\" hockey players but will be left in the dust by the hyper-motivated Chinese kids who dominate the AP classes.

And by the way, that list of classes isn\'t impressive.
You just described every Public, Private and Prep school in the United States of America. Every school has top level students, middle level students and low level students. Lets talk hockey now!
Respectfully, you missed my point. Public schools have a top, middle and bottom but many preps seem to have only a top and a bottom. The missing middle at prep is a problem for local kids because they either waste their time with the bottom or get run over by the top.

I have heard all of the \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"hockey\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" prep schools skating already. KUA, Cushing.....KUA.
What is a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"hockey\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" prep school?
It’s a Prep school with a great history of moving hockey players onto the next level. Schools like KUA, Cushing, Avon, Salisbury and Dexter. In the 80s/90s these schools didn’t offer much in academics so old people think those schools only focus on sports and not academics. They would be blown away by seeing the classes these kids are taking. Oh, and they are still hockey powerhouses!
They still don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t offer much for academics, there what you call a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"a pulse school\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" meaning all you need is a pulse to get in.
Can you tell me what other schools offer academically that cant be found at a \\\\\\\"pulse\\\\\\\" school? AP Calculus is different from 1 school to another? Explain
List of AP courses at one of the local catholic schools. They offer 19 so why only 12 at Cushing? Please don't tout the strength of the academics when they're mediocre at best. If Cushing wants you they will get you in regardless of SSAT and put your kid in some basic classes so they remain eligible to play.

Again, explain the difference between taking the same AP course at Cushing vs AP course at your school of choice? Now compare the hockey coaching at Cushing vs your school of choice? Compare the facilities at Cushing vs your school of choice? Mic drop, you lose
I say it again, are you for real?

A course offering does not describe the quality or the academic rigor. According to your argument Milton is a horrible academic school.

To answer your question. The AP exam is uniform, the course is not. How many kids in the school are in AP courses, how many kids pass the exam with a 4 or a 5, not just a 3 or even a 2. Stop being so incredibly dumb.

You 2 are the biggest dorks on the dboard.. man up, kids who go to Cushing, Avon, KUA even some Lake Regions schools are there for athletics and rightfully so, they move kid to the next level. Schools like Exeter, Deerfield, Milton are there mainly for education. No need to trash either. Play nice now ladies

Ya ya ya...

Reading comprehension. No one disputes that. But the notion that these schools are academically superior and a hockey factory at the same time is just plain dumb.

3 and 2 are failing scores on the AP exam.

In the 80s/90s these schools didn’t offer much in academics so old people think those schools only focus on sports and not academics.

Wrong bud. Guy called Cushing a "pulse" school, Cushing guy asked the difference between AP classes at Cushing vs any other school..Guy went off about students in the class and "rigor"..Cushing guy never said anything about being superior. Follow along. I did not go to prep in the 90's but would have jumped at the opportunity to play hockey at Cushing Academy or Avon. Still Powerhouses to this day.

2 is possibly qualified and if you can demonstrate extenuating circumstances, like going to Cushing, you might get credit. 3 is qualified.

Most schools don’t give credit with a 2 or a 3, some do. Sit down.

Re: Prep Quarantine

Just to follow up on the original topic, many teams are struggling to fill rosters with so many prep players in lock down. I don't see fall hockey being very competitive this season.

Re: Prep Quarantine

Now that prep schools are starting up again I have to admit how wrong I was. There are alot of kids leaving prep to play some version of high level midget or jr hockey. My son called me today to tell me about 4 kids not coming back at his school and another school with 4 also not coming back. All are seniors so that makes some sense but to not make up your mind until now is just wrong.

How is it wrong? Don't you always want to make major decisions with the benefit of the most complete information?

I've said all summer if a player has choices they should explore them. Have a Plan B, C and D. Now that a path has to be taken, they're making their decision public.

You sound like you feel a little butt-hurt about being left out, now that you're on the outside looking in. They don't owe you or your kid anything.

Your right, kids should just take everything for granted and not have any loyalty to any decision they make. My point is, if you knew last month that you were going to leave you tell the team so they can find replacements, don't forget, every 17/18 year old is replaceable, but a little heads up isnt to much to ask. There are few kids doing USHL training camp this/next week, coach told them not to come back if they don't make it. I applaud that.
Its like dating a 6, having a shot at a 10, not getting anywhere with the 10, and going back to the 6, and the 6 telling you to F off.

Oh, please. Loyalty goes both ways and it has to start with the school here. I saw four-year seniors that were starters during a down cycle lose playing time to freshmen that weren’t yet as good because promises were made and the bill came due.

Like I said, you’re butt-hurt. Your kid is stuck on a not-as-good team with no Plan B. He must have been planning to ride the bench to the Elite 8 because if he were good he would see this as an opportunity to play a larger role.

And find me any Prep coach that wouldn’t welcome a USHL level talent back with open arms. At my kid’s school teammates were allowed to miss school to play in the U in the fall. Better than losing them!

I guess we will see what happens. A lot of schools have kids doing “remote” learning as they try out for every team they can find.
