First come/first served? Friends & Family? Blind tryout? Everyone makes a team - instead of 4 teams have 15?
For anyone younger than 04, this year is just one year, for a lot of these older kids this is it - didn't have a chance this season to be seen by college coaches, didn't have a chance this season to be seen by USHL/NAHL coaches. the draft eligible kids haven't had an opportunity to be seen in competitive games this season. Prioritizing those that need to be seen is appropriate for what they communicated from the beginning that they were trying to do.
BTW...It is a private league - a one time shot - they want it to be competitive and can structure it how ever they want.

They should have just done "invite only" from the start. It was stupid to do "everyone just email us who's interested". Now you have the current scenario.
And they have a great new email list to cultivate subscribers. Capitalism is providing a service people want and getting paid as much as you can for it.
Think those not picked will unsubscribe? Tough call, players/ parents are sensitive right now. Imagine they take these deserving 80 kids and lose 420 subscriptions. Any talk of how much this league costs?
Interesting concept. Seeing it’s based in MA, will they be taking out of state players? Will be tough for boarding students to participate I would assume as they can’t really leave campus until June”ish”. Really like the idea though, even if just MA kids, it will be great exposure to some good coaching, skills, etc.
