You will probably see many responses in favor for either one. Ultimately it comes down to what your kid wants and where will he be the happiest. Let him tell you the answer versus you telling him. I'm sure you have been driving the bus for most of his career. Time to step aside and let him take the wheel cause before you know it the ride will be over.
If you are talking public schools, there are no JV first lines. Coaches roll lines in JV. If the coaches is not, he should be fired.
JV Hockey is terrible.
Talk to coach about practicing with Varsity but playing JV games...done all the time

My son just did JV as a freshman and it is a bit of a hockey wasteland. Plenty of playing time but the competition is all over the map and it seems more like an extension of youth hockey than high school. If nothing else it has motivated him to work hard this offseason to make the jump next year.
