Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

agreed, despicable

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

Our annual question of the UMASS Minutemen (5-24-2) men's hockey staff; if you're the self proclaimed "Flagship hockey program Commonwealth" and your record is once again terrible then why not commit to more local, in-state talent?

Checking the roster I see a total of three, yes three Massachusetts kids on the roster. Make the place a destination for the in-state kids and you couldn't do much worse than 5-24-2.

If you are a Massachusetts kid would you commit to UMass hockey? I wouldnt....Mass kids go to BU/BC/Harvard and even UNH or Vermont over Umass.

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

If I were a Massachusetts kid would I commit UMass hockey?

Yeah, if it meant tuition payments to Babson, Trinity, Norwich or packing my bags and going to St. Cloud State, Bemidji State or Canisius College....

Each case is different and there is a lot of local talent they overlook. I mean, never take a look at. They hardly lock anyone down early locally.

Because the cant! No 14 or 15 year old local stud is going to commit to Umass. Umass has to look elsewhere.

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

But if they built it and looked early and enticed the lad$

They got all excited about the BC High kid and he wouldn't be in the top 10 defesnemen to play in the state (C.C. & Public) in the last 2-3 years. Many of the better D men have moved on and they missed them.

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

Have you seen them scouting tournaments? Aaaaah, not around here.

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

My son's coach told us that they were VERY interested in him but waiting to make an offer until he got a little older. Made no sense at all. Why not at least try to lock up a 16 year old with a strong offer before he goes elsewhere?

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

New regime, same old story. They have everything they need in Amherst to succeed. The building, the Campus, the Conference, being on television. All they need to do is convince a couple kids and it'll snowball. The BB team does the same thing though. It's a head scratcher.

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

How much worse can it be? For christ sakes recruit the in-state kids!!!!

Re: Our annual UMASS-Amherst question

Don't hold your breath on recruiting local kids.

From Jeff Cox who seems to have been hit in the head with a few too many pucks -

"UMass is bringing in one of the best recruiting classes in the country, including potential top 10 NHL Draft pick Cale Makar, a defenseman out of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). Fargo Force goaltender Matt Murray and Des Moines Buccaneers defenseman Mario Ferraro also highlight the incoming class."
