And by the way, KP's kid should be on the Brick team. He is that good. One of the best players at the 06 level I have ever seen. And no I am not related to KP.
Best rich kids in the state! Go get 'em boys!
My kid went to brick. Great experience at a high cost. Every year one or two kids don't make brick that should. lots of politics. That's the only bad thing.
Sounds like KP needs to get another job. This is a financial marathon, not a sprint. And many of those parents than show early signs of greatness flame-out and never really develop. It takes a lot to be a complete hockey parent and in today's world you really need to be a 'five tool parent.' And unlimited resources is just one componet to any parent reaching their full potential.
Eastern Mass hockey must be short on rich kids, the 07 brick team has a couple kids from Western Mass on it. I wonder if the other parents know or do the Western Mass contingent just fake the accent.
"The accent?" Could it be any worse than Bostonian? The floating 'r,' - "My cah is pahked in that area'er" "He's in law'er enforcement." The silent 't' - "He's from New-ehn, originally from Manhahen." And the impossible to say 'u' sound. "Shore I went on tore in the Ahhme" "Is that a fishing lore?"
So curious....sounds like there are alot of folks here who have made the trip to 'the Brick' in past years, what was the cost? I know the team fee is about 3k but how much of that is really deferred by fundraising?
What is the 'all in' cost (team fee, travel, additional tournament fees, etc) and how does the fundraising factor in to that cost? And i get it, if you have to ask...you probably shouldnt be going. Just curious on the cost as my son would be trying out in a few years.
Thanks for your help.
I think the Globe's Spotlight team should do a story on Youth Hockey!
How in god's name does one rationalize fundraising for a hockey trip to Europe? IF you have the money and inclination, great! Have Fun! If not, why go door to to door asking others to foot the bill, so your kid can go? Makes no sense! With all the meaningful causes out there, why would anybody want to contribute to that? You think the plumber down the street wants to throw your Lil Johnny a "C Note" so your kid can yodle in the Alps while his kid has water balloon fights while you sip on your Natty Lights in your above ground pool? F That!
How bout, the Owners of these programs look at these tournaments as a free trip to Europe and charge the kid much less! Enjoy the free trip and make a few bucks. Why so Greedy??
I'm curious too, is there checking in The Brick? Posts here have always maintained "in Canada they start checking in Squirts..."
No checking at brick. Cost for player and one adult
roughly 6 k
The Fee this year was $3,750. Includes tournament fees (4), 2 practices a week, Game Jerseys, Hockey Bag, and all types of "swag. See Photos of locker room on web.
As far as overall cost, they play in three tournaments prepping for Edmonton, one of which was in Toronto (4 days) and they are in Edmonton for minimum of 11 days. So depending on the size of the family, plane tickets, hotel costs, food, activities, etc, it varies. Would have cost me over 14K with my family.
The best part is they offered alternate positions to!
So how does the fundraising and sponsor $ get applied. I see all the mentions to the sponsors donating 100s (some 1000s) to the Jr Bruins Brick team. Does that go 'to the program' or back to the families?
Any families out there will past experience on this or is everyone just throwing out what they have heard?
So you and your son were reimbursed the full amount from fundraising efforts? I find that hard to believe. What fundraisers were done and how much did you actually see from them?
That kid selling those discount cards won't sell his allotment of $500 worth of cards. And guess who is going to have foot the bill for the balance? His Mom and dad. So stop worrying about what your neighbor can or can't afford and get your own bender off his xbox and make HIM cut dad's lawn and maybe, just maybe.... he'll earn all the ice you pay for.
Why should I not expect Mr. Fractional Jet to pay his kid's entire trip cost? He SHOULD be paying for it, not his neighbors. Don't get your logic at all.
Now, if he wants to teach his kid a work ethic by getting his hands dirty for the five c-notes, I'm happy to help.
3750 team fee, 1000 tournament in Toronto (travel, expenses), 1000 (2) r/t flights to YEG, 1200 hotel, 1500+ expenses = $8500+ for your kid to play spring hockey with Jr Bs and attend the Brick w/ 1 parent. From anyone that has been in the past, does that sound right? If so, what fundraisers are done and how much did you actually see from your efforts?
I'd rather use the money to fund another three years of youth hockey. I think the aggregate experience of three years worth of youth hockey memories would far outweigh a week of tournament hockey in Canada, doesn't matter what tournament it is or how good the players are.
1/2 the kids on that team will stop playing when checking starts or shortly after.
Exactly what right do any of you losers on this board have to tell me what i should and should not do with My money. If i want to spend $10,000 on a hockey tournament and i have the money then guess what, Screw you. I am going to do it. If my kid wants to go to a great hockey tournament or Disney or Europe or or do one on one skills then that's what he is going to get to do. Just because you cant afford to do these things doesn't mean i should not be able to do them. This is why this country is going to crap. Mind your own business and worry about you. Maybe your lives will be happier instead of being jealous of what others have.
^Well said
You all need to get a life. The parents are pathetic at this point and the owners are loving every minute of it!
It's cry babies like you who spend their time worrying about your lack of money, other people's money, other people's kids, the owners, where youth hockey is going and why...on and on and on that gives it all a bad name. If it's an issue a) go get another job to supplement the annual hockey budget or b) find another sport that takes less time & money.
Until then, enjoy the ride!
"Hockey seems to be alone amongst major sports where there are no stories of kids overcoming tough economic backgrounds and rising to the top."
I'm not sure if you've ever visited a farm out in the Midwest or one in most parts of Canada but let me tell you might just find some "tough economic backgrounds" out there.
And as for the inner city kids finding the sport, just wait until a few smart guys bring Lacrosse to the inner city. It will be bye, bye country club stoner boy for the scholarships.
Agree 100%. My oldest son quit lacrosse because the other players were such DBags and pot heads. The tipping point was when they were all getting stoned BEFORE practice. . . in the 8th grade.
It would be hilarious to collect used equipment in the toney suburbs and donate it to the inner city, throw some events with some meaningful prizes and talk to the schools about the possibilities of scholarships. Heck, Brocton high would be as fine a place to start as any.
Currently, that sport is filled with failed hockey and baseball players that found a sport they can excel at, and they are insufferable.
Whenever a new parent tells me their kid is really good at lacrosse and that is their number one sport, I know I am getting an pretty bad hockey player !
my son is a hell of a hockey player. He is also considered a great athlete and does well in baseball, golf, lacrosse and football. And in my kids case, he is a better lax player than hockey player, so go post your hollow opinions elsewhere. Your theory of a kid being a good lax player equating to the kid sucking at hockey is the stupidest thing I've seen posted on this new d board. Keep chugging the moonshine and eventually you will come to the realization that you know absolutely nothing about kids and sports. Or maybe you are just a troll looking to stir up trouble. Wait, is that your mom i hear calling for you to tell you your grilled cheese sandwich is ready? Moron.
"Whenever a new parent tells me their kid is really good at lacrosse and that is their number one sport, I know I am getting an pretty bad hockey player !"
explain this quote to me then. The way i interpret it, guy is saying bad hockey players make good lax players. Can be taken two ways, guy is being sarcastic comparing benders hockey parents to parents of weak lax players, or he is just making a statement with no basis behind it. I choose to take him for his word where he is stating bad hockey players can easily become good lacrosse players, which is far from the truth, hence the good athlete comment i made.
Oh yea, not conceited about my son being a good athlete, he is, and also he is a lot better than your kid in hockey, thats for sure! EHF, E9, MP whatever league, valley league, he will blow your kid up big time.
Have a good evening my friend.
I guarantee, you are nowhere close to as obnoxious as you are positioning yourself to be, protected by the anonymity of the keyboard, than if I were to meet you IRL.
Which means you are suppressing your true, deep rooted insecurities and are filled with self-doubt that people will accept you for who you truly are. So, you pretend to be something you are not, and have convince yourself that you and your offspring are, somehow, superior.
When, in reality you know that it's a sham.
Gawd I want to see the two most recent posters fight each other, IRL, as the latest poster says. Clowns, the whole lot of you. Go to bed! Just so you know, everyone on here is an obnoxious ******
all i know is that when they are young if your a good athlete you typically are the better player in any off the sports they play. Top hockey players are also the top Baseball, Lacrosse, soccer players in my area. E9, EHF MPDHL kids are the all stars for baseball and lacrosse and on the Competative Soccer teams in our area I dont think that changes much until kids start to specialize. So to say a kid is a good lacrosse player and bad hockey player you could be right but typically the top spots are all held by the same kids.
Love this thread!! Almost as good as Prep one.... Anyone who says their 10 year old is great at any sport is a loser, he is 10 he is not great at anything... Read some bios of some of best lax players. Many have pretty good cred from hockey and other major sports.... There are kids specializing in hockey at 8 that will never play 4 years of good prep hockey, go to USA hockey camps etc... some kids just choose lax and academics... here are a couple bios from Yale and Hopkins - NE kids - pay attention your little all star that cant read will prob be working for people like this.....
At Dexter
• Two-sport standout in lacrosse and hockey.
• Played lacrosse for former Johns Hopkins midfielder Mark Goodrich.
• Led lacrosse team in scoring all four years and graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer.
• Helped lacrosse team to New England Small School Championship as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
• Standout goalie in ice hockey.
• Drafted by the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League and national camp with USA Hockey.
At Phillips Exeter: Captain of lacrosse and hockey teams, played both sports all four years…Two-time U.S. Lacrosse All-American…Two-time Under Armour Underclass All-American…Three-time All-New England East…Under Armour Senior All-American…Three-time New England East champions in lacrosse…Team ranked third in New England during junior year…Three years on honor roll.
"Standout goalie in ice hockey."
I thought you said he was a hockey PLAYER. Goalies aren't players, they are tall, mildly strange athletic kids....or at least the good ones are.
i think we lost the "Brick" topic
^Get a life. Who gives a **** if a kid (who is not yours) likes lacrosse as his favorite sport? I wish I had it around when I was younger. It is a great sport to watch your kids play.
News flash hitting a baseball is not hard. Any fat guy with ok hand eye coordination can hit a baseball but if Tons cant make it to first, whats the difference. Saying Soccer and Lacrosse each dont need athletic ability is just Ridiculous and shows your ignorance of the games.
wow, this guy is as awesome as his kid who is too good for lacrosse!
