You all need to get a life. The parents are pathetic at this point and the owners are loving every minute of it!
It's cry babies like you who spend their time worrying about your lack of money, other people's money, other people's kids, the owners, where youth hockey is going and why...on and on and on that gives it all a bad name. If it's an issue a) go get another job to supplement the annual hockey budget or b) find another sport that takes less time & money.
Until then, enjoy the ride!
"Hockey seems to be alone amongst major sports where there are no stories of kids overcoming tough economic backgrounds and rising to the top."
I'm not sure if you've ever visited a farm out in the Midwest or one in most parts of Canada but let me tell you might just find some "tough economic backgrounds" out there.
And as for the inner city kids finding the sport, just wait until a few smart guys bring Lacrosse to the inner city. It will be bye, bye country club stoner boy for the scholarships.
Agree 100%. My oldest son quit lacrosse because the other players were such DBags and pot heads. The tipping point was when they were all getting stoned BEFORE practice. . . in the 8th grade.
It would be hilarious to collect used equipment in the toney suburbs and donate it to the inner city, throw some events with some meaningful prizes and talk to the schools about the possibilities of scholarships. Heck, Brocton high would be as fine a place to start as any.
Currently, that sport is filled with failed hockey and baseball players that found a sport they can excel at, and they are insufferable.
Whenever a new parent tells me their kid is really good at lacrosse and that is their number one sport, I know I am getting an pretty bad hockey player !
my son is a hell of a hockey player. He is also considered a great athlete and does well in baseball, golf, lacrosse and football. And in my kids case, he is a better lax player than hockey player, so go post your hollow opinions elsewhere. Your theory of a kid being a good lax player equating to the kid sucking at hockey is the stupidest thing I've seen posted on this new d board. Keep chugging the moonshine and eventually you will come to the realization that you know absolutely nothing about kids and sports. Or maybe you are just a troll looking to stir up trouble. Wait, is that your mom i hear calling for you to tell you your grilled cheese sandwich is ready? Moron.
"Whenever a new parent tells me their kid is really good at lacrosse and that is their number one sport, I know I am getting an pretty bad hockey player !"
explain this quote to me then. The way i interpret it, guy is saying bad hockey players make good lax players. Can be taken two ways, guy is being sarcastic comparing benders hockey parents to parents of weak lax players, or he is just making a statement with no basis behind it. I choose to take him for his word where he is stating bad hockey players can easily become good lacrosse players, which is far from the truth, hence the good athlete comment i made.
Oh yea, not conceited about my son being a good athlete, he is, and also he is a lot better than your kid in hockey, thats for sure! EHF, E9, MP whatever league, valley league, he will blow your kid up big time.
Have a good evening my friend.
I guarantee, you are nowhere close to as obnoxious as you are positioning yourself to be, protected by the anonymity of the keyboard, than if I were to meet you IRL.
Which means you are suppressing your true, deep rooted insecurities and are filled with self-doubt that people will accept you for who you truly are. So, you pretend to be something you are not, and have convince yourself that you and your offspring are, somehow, superior.
When, in reality you know that it's a sham.
Gawd I want to see the two most recent posters fight each other, IRL, as the latest poster says. Clowns, the whole lot of you. Go to bed! Just so you know, everyone on here is an obnoxious ******
all i know is that when they are young if your a good athlete you typically are the better player in any off the sports they play. Top hockey players are also the top Baseball, Lacrosse, soccer players in my area. E9, EHF MPDHL kids are the all stars for baseball and lacrosse and on the Competative Soccer teams in our area I dont think that changes much until kids start to specialize. So to say a kid is a good lacrosse player and bad hockey player you could be right but typically the top spots are all held by the same kids.
Love this thread!! Almost as good as Prep one.... Anyone who says their 10 year old is great at any sport is a loser, he is 10 he is not great at anything... Read some bios of some of best lax players. Many have pretty good cred from hockey and other major sports.... There are kids specializing in hockey at 8 that will never play 4 years of good prep hockey, go to USA hockey camps etc... some kids just choose lax and academics... here are a couple bios from Yale and Hopkins - NE kids - pay attention your little all star that cant read will prob be working for people like this.....
At Dexter
• Two-sport standout in lacrosse and hockey.
• Played lacrosse for former Johns Hopkins midfielder Mark Goodrich.
• Led lacrosse team in scoring all four years and graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer.
• Helped lacrosse team to New England Small School Championship as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
• Standout goalie in ice hockey.
• Drafted by the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League and national camp with USA Hockey.
At Phillips Exeter: Captain of lacrosse and hockey teams, played both sports all four years…Two-time U.S. Lacrosse All-American…Two-time Under Armour Underclass All-American…Three-time All-New England East…Under Armour Senior All-American…Three-time New England East champions in lacrosse…Team ranked third in New England during junior year…Three years on honor roll.
"Standout goalie in ice hockey."
I thought you said he was a hockey PLAYER. Goalies aren't players, they are tall, mildly strange athletic kids....or at least the good ones are.
i think we lost the "Brick" topic
^Get a life. Who gives a **** if a kid (who is not yours) likes lacrosse as his favorite sport? I wish I had it around when I was younger. It is a great sport to watch your kids play.
News flash hitting a baseball is not hard. Any fat guy with ok hand eye coordination can hit a baseball but if Tons cant make it to first, whats the difference. Saying Soccer and Lacrosse each dont need athletic ability is just Ridiculous and shows your ignorance of the games.
wow, this guy is as awesome as his kid who is too good for lacrosse!
Islanders and Lynnfield youth football. Now you are going to spend hours trying to figure out who I am.
Previous poster correct. All-star means nothing until you know the size of the pond the kid is swimming in.
Youth hockey is like owning a boat, "B.O.A.T. - Bring Out Another Thousand." Money is no object and never try to make economic sense of it...you can't.
my son was fortunate enough to play in "the brick" 15 or so yrs ago. still talks about it to this day as one of the most fun things he's ever done. its different for all kids i'd imagine. my son went on to play prep school sports, did junior hockey here and in canada and played hockey in college. that's a lot of hockey but truly still lists the brick among his most fun times in the sport. there are probably no less than 20 kids that played in that tournament in the NHL right now including one boy from his team who's a legit star in the league. countless others in the minors and who played college hockey at various levels. if you can afford the trip i highly recommend it, (must be even better now), it's a ton of fun, the production is top notch and the kids are treated like stars. if you have to take a second mortgage to do it, i'd say pass. it's a great memory and fun time but it comes at a price. for out family it was a great decision and wonderful memory.
just my opinion
Good for you and your kid. It might not be for everyone but it sounds like it worked for you.
