How about the Jr Reds Select Skills league ? Any good, or typical 6th grade/pee wee minor with mix of skill levels ??

Reds are in it to make money, the other teams are run by parents so kids from the same town can play together. The other posters are right, it is purely fun. You will be licky to make more than half the games with conflicts from you full time team. let you kid go out and have some fun.

Thanks. I am aware of the local teams, kid has been asked to play on one and I have coached a few in the past.

I was specifically asking about the skill level or other pros/cons with the Reds, never had a chance to see the league but kid was aksed to play so figured I would ask.

In the past Reds were usually filled with a lot of vipers kids as it was MS's program. When my kid was going through middle school hockey the reds teams would never have more than 7 or 8 kids on any given night.

Not sure what they will have this year, but in the past it has been approximately EHF Tier 1 level teams, which are probably middle of the pack in the Martian league.

Agreed. Not good hockey. It is a minimal investment (about $200-250) Most teams are a mix of club players and Town A/B/C kids. Club players show off. C kids struggle to keep up but kids have fun. No one takes it very seriously and locker room before and after games is filled with laughter.

Also a good opportunity for kids to try new positions with no pressure/expectations.
My son (a D) gets to have some fun at FWD and play with kids he hasn't skated with since Mites.
Sure it gets messy, and they'll miss a few games due to club conflicts, but I think it's worth it.

Last two posters have it right. Just think of it as a way to show off his skills and have some fun. He'll probably get a rise out of playing with friends that he hasn't played with or against in years, maybe ever. Not a development opportunity, even if playing up a grade.

If your kid is good you'll regret not playing up it is really weak hockey. Even playing up a year won't challenge a strong player it's that bad.

hey nit wit, the idea is to play with your friends and have fun, playing up puts you with kids in a different grade. If you kid is that good, play him up a year in the EHF, otherwise, let your friggin kid have fun for once and stop shoving him into places he should not be.

I only speak for the Valley MS League. Not sure about others.

Ours is through the youth hockey program, but they usually ask a parent of a kid on a club team to reach out to kids and put the team together. Our town does a good job of inviting everyone that plays hockey (town or club) in each grade, but maybe other towns keep it on the DL.

These are typically school leagues, run independent of schools due to funding though. Not all schools have teams
