Be sure you know what you are signing up for with U14...
Problem is most people wont know what to sign up for. If your kid is a 9th grader and trying out for high school you arent sure if he is making varsity until post tryouts.

Which is why you sign up for full season and if he makes Varsity move forward from there. If he doesn't, and you signed up for half season, you have to go looking.
And, candidly, unless your kid is a real stud, how good is the Varsity team he will get meaningful minutes on as a Freshman? Chances are you should hope he doesn't make Varsity, because his full season U14 team is probably going to develop him more.
IS JM really doing a U14 with the prospects? How is that going to work and where will they skate out of, kids from NY, VT, CT, MA, NJ. Its on the website so it must be true!
Heard it will be with Falcons/Huskies also? any info
what about the idea of half season winter teams? I have seen a few examples where the organization keeps the better U14's together in the fall for a split season team..... both 8th and 9th graders. Then when fall split season ends and high school starts.... the 8th graders and some of the 9th graders stay together and form a winter half season team. There should always be a kid or two from other organizations in the area that fall into the same bucket to help fill out the team.
the idea is having trouble gaining traction, but I think it is really the best way to handle it.... otherwise, if you are a 8th grade U14... the best option might just be skills and maybe a few tournaments to supplement the missing games. who wants to do just that?
but yes... everyone is spot on that the U14 is a mess of a year. It is the major downside to USAH going with strict birth years, not school year, and with parents insisting that their johnny freshman plays varsity and rides the pine.
Love this time of year...so much jockeying and back stabbing and flat out lying going on...Be careful who you believe...
This is true
If you are in this situation, you must likely put yourself there. This time of year is only dramatic for teams with parents who think their kids are better than they are.
The kids are still only 13-14, get some perspective people.
There are are tons of options for U14, find one and move on.
Update: Now I see people are skipping Bantam Major all together and going right to U16? Hope Trump doesn't cancel your health insurance because your kid is going to need it! Our oldest played up but he was 6 Feet tall and about 155lbs and he still got killed, every game, it took a huge toll on his body. Now we have applications from 13/14 year old 100lb kids coming in who can barely compete at the level they are at now. OK, you asked for it.

100% agree - plenty of options. If you're not happy where you are/have been, move - no one has a lock on u14 hockey, so don't listen to any coaches or orgs that tell you you're better off staying if you really don't want to be there.
Bottom line, do what will make your player happy and continue to enjoy hockey - that's all that matters.

My kid's U14 years were fine, no issues. Played full season both years, everyone else did, too. Lost a couple of kids to JV the first year (such a waste) and one kid to a bad Varsity team the second. No big deal, certainly not a "mess of a year."
Know lots of other kids whose U14 years were fine as well. I guess it depends on the quality of the program or, in the words of BTO, "if you get in with the right bunch of fellows."
