Youth sports contracts are meaningless in a court of law. Payment terms are only thing that would be applicable.
The contract has more to do with kids jumping team to team in season. They don't want teams to poach each others kids. Within the league of course!!
Also, much easier to make a claim in court with a written contract
If you don't have a contract at this stage of the game then it sounds like you need to send your wife in to meet the coach and close the deal.

We have never had a contract before tryouts. Then again my kid is 10 so we have a life
