My son did it for mites and it was a lot of hockey. I wouldn't do it above mites. Take the money that you'd spend on town and sign him up for extra skills. That will pay dividends much more than playing town.
At the "club" level, your kid has one full sheet, one half sheet and a club sponsored skills either each week or every other week. Likely 2 games a weekend so he's on the ice 5 out of 7 days every other week. If you supplement his club schedule with some concentrated skills his skating, stick handling and fundamentals will improve.
My town had a series of exceptional coaches with D1 and Pro experience so at the younger levels the individual "coaching" was actually better than the EHF Elite program he played in. The problem was that when HS hockey started the town youth ice time dried up and he was lucky to get 2 practices in a week. Usually it was 1 practice a week in addition to a game. Having the scheduled weekly ice time of the EHF team was a big advantage and we did it for 2 years before going exclusively with the EHF team. We had good luck with not too many schedule conflicts but others doing the same thing seemed to have a ton of them so your mileage may very.
