Re: Brick 2013

Their motto seems to be if a player is good enough a spot will be found for them. League/level doesn't matter. You just have to be good. I'm guessing the kids that were there previously have an in but that doesn't mean they wouldn't take other good players.

Are you saying it's 30k total if You did it for 3 years prior to being on the brick with hotel/plane costs ?

Re: Brick 2013

what happened in past means nothing - if you played for 4 years no guarantee of a spot. The best will go and then 50% will play D1. That's how it goes.

Re: Brick 2013

My kid played in the Brick in 2017, he absolutely loved it. Edmonton is kind of dull City , some things to do but not exactly a bustling metropolis. If your kid makes the team he’ll love it.

He also did the Q in Feb 2020, absolutely loved that tournament. Didn’t exactly like the Covid I came home with. These tournaments are expensive, make some people a ton of money. But the kids love it and remember everything about them for years.

Re: Brick 2013

Seems like they should just send the 2014 team since they are STACKED!

I'm sure some of the parents would jump at that. A few '15s tried out for the '14 jr bruins as well so there are crazy parents in that group too.

Ive been saying that for a while. This group is special. A couple 14 nat elite were asked to try out for 13 brick. They did very well and deserve spots.

Does anybody make it that wasn't on the teams last year? They get you for 30k for 3 years and then you get to go to the brick. How many actual spots exist. We skate EHF elite but I assume will not make the top 35.
…..I’m sorry did you just write “we skate EHF elite”? “We” do nothing. “You” pay and drive. Your kid may skate EHF Elite but it’s not a we thing.

Oh come on. Give him a break, his kid is 9. It's a we thing for now. Kids don't know how to sign up for anything, drive to the rinks, or pay.

It’s ok, he will eventually realize that once he removes himself and his desires from his kids experience they will both enjoy it exponentially more. I’ve been where he is and looking back on it I can’t believe how immature I was to have that mentality. We parents provide the opportunity, drive and pay. That’s it!

Re: Brick 2013

Travel and other stuff aside, how much does it cost to be on the brick team? People here are saying it’s 10k - is this the contract only, or is it contract + travel?

Re: Brick 2013

All said and done, depending on how many you bring to Edmonton, it’s $15-$20k for travel, jerseys and gear, and tourney fees.

Re: Brick 2013

The "we" parents are also the same group that carries their kids bag while we all laugh at them.

Re: Brick 2013

$15-$20k is total bulll****

Re: Brick 2013

Don’t know what you tell ya but that is the cost to be on the brick team.

Re: Brick 2013

Why was there 2014 National Elite skaters at the 2013 Brick tryout over the weekend? Is the talent pool not that deep for the 2013s?

Because the parents are crazy and asked to be included. The 2014 should wait until next year. I know one amazing kid didn't even tryout at 2013. It is a circus and they seem to select similar kids and families every year.

2014s were asked to try out for brick. They didn't have enough defensemen from the 2013s so they asked some 2014 Ds to come and even things out.

Re: Brick 2013

"Tuition" 3-5K (Gear, tourney fees, other swag)
Travel to pre tournaments (2-3K)
Travel expenses for Edmonton (3K)
Better 'ballpark' is 8-12K total.

Re: Brick 2013

The hotel alone was almost like $2300. Don’t forget you have to be up there from opening to closing ceremonies which is a week. We played a scrimmage the day of opening ceremonies so we went up the day before. Plane tickets were $650 (fam of 4 went) so there is 5k just in plane tickets and hotel. Rental car, food, fun money…I think all and all just Edmonton was just south of $10k. You can do it cheaper with less people but I’d say most had a family of 4 there.

It does sound like a lot but no one has to do it. Seems like people have similar feelings about the Q. Everyone says how it worth it and great it is but lots of complaining about the timing and price. A lot of people have FOMO in youth hockey.

$650 per plane ticket seems like a lot. Many tournaments seem to be a dad and son or a mom and son...but if people feel the need to bring their whole family that's again on them and sounds like some FOMO. Of course some can easily afford to do that. There isn't a whole lot of time for sightseeing if that's what people are hoping for unless you tack on extra days which is more $$.

Re: Brick 2013

Most tournies are a one parent tourney but the brick seems to be a full family event. Go look at flights from Boston to Edmonton and don’t forget it’s over the 4th of July and you get about a 4-6 weeks notice that you are on the team. You also only play 1 game a day except one day you play 2 so there is a lot of down time. We did the shamrock, Toronto, Boston showdown, Montreal, Pittsburgh, and the brick as tournies. Obviously the shamrock and showdown are local but the others are $1000-$1500 weekends as well, more if you fly.

Re: Brick 2013

Why do people only get 4-6 weeks notice? If the tryouts were this weekend (early dec) and the tourney is in July..wouldn't they able to tell people sooner?

Yeah, hockey does seem to require a good amount of travel. I think people know this when they get into it but many of it comes to choices. You don't have to do everything.

Re: Brick 2013

Our process was they selected the top 35 after the January tryouts and then played the shamrock and Toronto and then selected the brick team. A lot of people found out after the shamrock though which was early april but some found out after Toronto which was late May.

My son and played on the Brick team in 2017. We were told in January he had made the team. And booked flights and hotel that week. It was just me and the boy so total costs for the trip ran me around 8k. Tuition, Uniform package and hotel were the big $$$ items.

Re: Brick 2013

Yeah they have changed the process since then.
