Nah I'm not tapped. People have less kids today in case you haven't noticed in additional to all the fear mongering around CTE and hockey being dangerous. More leagues and teams has created an illusion of more kids playing hockey. The only reason there might be more kids playing hockey today is that there are girls playing now.

Overall US is going to be up with new markets like a vegas, florida, California etc…is it up in the northeast?
Good points that other states seem to have an increase in hockey players. In MA I assume numbers are up mostly because of girls. I think hockey is more expensive than it was before and also more time consuming. More travel at younger ages. I can see why someone might say no thanks to it.

People on this forum seem to think everyone is doing expensive club travel teams in MA but this isn't the case. Maybe everyone posting here does but that's not a huge amount of people. Plenty of kids you see playing now who are under 10 will not keep playing.

I'm only willing to do so much research but here you go
2002/3 Paid USA Hockey Members 35,942
2010/11 Paid USA Hockey Members 38,083
2021/22 Paid USA Hockey Members 40,100

2002/03 Paid Girls 6,153
2010/11 Paid Girls 9,102
2021/22 Paid Girls 11,452

Data suggests the boys pretty much held steady for the last two decades and growth came from the girls game. I'm sure if I someone wanted to, they could chase down the Google rabbit hole for even older data but I don't actually care enough about this, just something to do while on a useless conference call.

On a side note, experienced officials are down, pretty much held steady from 02/3 to 10/11 with approximately 1,100 Level 2 & 3 officials, 2021/22 approximately 750.

This data shows a similar increase (5000 kids) between boys and girls over 20 years.

Also, we only care about FED elite. This league looks like garbage. Just play town hockey for less $$$$. Unless you are top 50 don't spend money on it.

STFU. That is the reason everyone comes here. No one wants to hear about NESHL which no one has heard of until today. It is silly that people join these new leagues and pay. Why do we need a new league with 4 already. They need to consolidate. People don't join this league of garbage teams. The poster above was right some teams were competitive with UG and crappy platinum. At that point just go to FED UG or platinum. You also have the E9, BHL, and PHL.

I don't think it's a league. I think it is a single 2011 division. Seems like these teams just got together and created their own thing. There is nothing at any other level. I also think that some of these posts are saying that they are better than said BHL, T1 UG, G, PHL as well as most T1 Platinum and E9.

What? Do you seriously think the speed and competition your kid plays against doesn’t matter? If that’s what you think stay at town, doesn’t matter. But even if your kid just wants to be competitive in high school, it still matters. You will eventually see why.

Yes & No. In the prehistoric days, the best kids played Metro so the league certainly helped better players develop beyond their peers as it was best on best competition & practices. Today, the better leagues (EHF Elite/E9) get the kids more attention, therefore creating more opportunities for players but as has been pointed out too many times to count, many of the players on these teams are interchangeable with others. If your kid is playing second line/second pairing or lower on a highly ranked team, understand that he's good but not elite & interchangeable with lots of other players. Take advantage of as many opportunities being on that team brings your player to build recognition as it will make a difference in his Bantam + years.

No one is saying speed and competition don't matter. For BA it would be great to have some better competition within the E9, but many don't see it as a reason to leave BA. Do you think when BA plays other E9 teams the other E9 teams stand there and do nothing?

At the younger ages kids get better at practice and skill sessions - not in playing against a team that is better than them (or not) for 20 minutes.

There are plenty of top EHF teams don't get much competition either in the league.

I had never heard of NESHL until this thread, but based on its name I assume it's just a second team/extra ice time for these players. Nothing wrong with that.

The problem is that nowadays people are willing to spend more to buy the “best” experience for their children. Play both club and town, so that Johnny can play better completion and also have fun with classmates. When conflict arises, there is an easy solution: abandon the town teammates. Other families will simply follow their steps and seek out club teams for better experience.

Town programs have the advantage of being more affordable and closer to home. If the people in charge are more serious about family commitment and do not allow full time club players on their top teams, many of the problems could be solved.

You can change club teams as often as you want, but you are expected to attend practices and games when you are with a team.

I think the question is why do some feel the need to change club teams multiple times. Seems like a red flag. Either you don't get along with people, you think your kid is too good for the team or you think your kid stinks and would do better on another team. Either way, no bueno.

Are valley jr warriors in EHL or E9?
The problem is that nowadays people are willing to spend more to buy the “best” experience for their children. Play both club and town, so that Johnny can play better completion and also have fun with classmates. When conflict arises, there is an easy solution: abandon the town teammates. Other families will simply follow their steps and seek out club teams for better experience.

Town programs have the advantage of being more affordable and closer to home. If the people in charge are more serious about family commitment and do not allow full time club players on their top teams, many of the problems could be solved.
When our town said you can't do both it created an exodus and the town program was left with really low numbers and made it very hard to compete, which made more people leave. They are considering a game only model, which would bring numbers back and make the town teams more competitive - albeit re-introducing the conflict dilemma. Proliferation of club hockey at such varied levels is a real problem across the board.

Town doesn't offer that. Watch FED elite and town and tell me you don't see a difference. Towns need to figure out how to coexist. New leagues are dumb just play town.

The depth of club is the problem, at a certain level all of the kids in the lower leagues should just be playing town - which will actually improve town development because it will re-centralize the talent again and stop it from being so diluted across BHL, rainbows, phl, etc.

Yes the problem seems to be that all of the better kids flock to one team. I thought the goal was to have teams evenly distributed across leagues but that is not the case.

What you are essentially wishing for is the previously mentioned Metro League and it or something similar isn't coming back in the next decade.

Folks, put your kids where you want, jump teams as often as you desire, etc. It's your money, do as you please and if others want to judge you, f them.

My only advice to those who haven't been through all of this before, remember, I don't care if your MHR ranking is #1, the best youth "elite" teams in MA/NH have no more than 5 elite players on them. I'm defining elite as kids that will play D-I college or higher, the other ten kids on a team, one or two more might play D-III but that's it. That's on the best elite teams, the bottom teams might not have any actual elite players on them.

I think the thing is that anyone can play for a club team. It's not like you're special if you play for a club team, it just means your parents are more invested and chose to spend more money and travel more. Im not putting club down but that's the truth.

Are there kids on club teams that happen to be very good? yes, some are, but don't be fooled into thinking they all are. There are kids on fed elite that aren't impressive.
